CROTTA UNDER 12 HURLING NEWS
Round 3 of the U12 hurling blitz was played last Friday evening in Dr. Crokes pitch in Killarney. Dr.Crokes, Laune Rangers, Kenmare, Kilgarvan, Duagh and Crotta took part. We were drawn to play Dr. Crokes, Duagh and Kenmare. First match for Crotta was against Dr. Crokes. This was probably the strongest team we have played so far. Dr. Crokes started very brightly and were a point up within the first few minutes and this was the only score of a tough first-half. We did not get going at all in this match and with Crokes backed by a strong breeze they ran out winners by 2-02 to Crotta’s 0-00. Our next match was against Duagh and this again was a titanic struggle. Duagh opened the scoring with a well taken goal. We were starting to find our form and the lads hurled very well. Barry Mahony playing as wing forward scored a fine point. We had a few other scoring chances but at half-time it was Duagh 1-0 Crotta 0-1. Darragh Sheehan finished a great Crotta move to the Duagh net at the start of the second half to give Crotta the lead which they never relinquished. We were very fortunate to win in the end but it was the first time we had beaten Duagh at this age group. Our final match was against Kenmare. Kenmare had the advantage of a strong breeze in the first half and were a goal to the good at the break. The second half was to see Crotta’s best hurling of the evening and Darragh Sheehan 0-1, Raymond Nolan 1-0, a Jordan Conway sideline which deflected off Connor Kennely and ended in the net and another Barry Mahony point saw us run out winners by 2-02 - 1-0. A very satisfying evening overall. We did not play as we can in the first match although Crokes were strong. The game against Duagh could have gone either way and against Kenmare we never seemed like losing once we took the lead. All players played their part and players who were to the fore included Barry Mahony who scored a couple of great points, Raymond Nolan scored a very good goal, Jordan Conway who hurled well at wing back, Ciaran Flanagan was very solid when moved to full back, Adam O'Sullivan who played well in goals, tom McElligott who started sluggishly but played superb hurling after the first game. Darragh Regan, Colin Browne, Cathal Kennelly (who had not played for a while), Darragh Sheehan (given half a chance will score), and Jamie O'Sullivan (in his first competitive match who struck great ball) all played very well. I felt Adrian Mahony in all three matches was the star of the evening. He gave everything for the cause. The following was the panel of players: Barry Mahony, Adrian Mahony, Brandon Conway, David Behan, Tom McElligott, Bill Keane, Darragh Regan, Jordan Conway, Ciaran Flanagan, Raymond Nolan, Sean O'Donoghue, Sean Gleasure, Darragh Sheehan, Colin Browne, Aaron Murnane, Adam O'Sullivan, Danny Quinland, Mark Egan, Darragh Kennelly, Donnacha Brosnan, Cathal Kennelly, Jamie O'Sullivan, Dominic Nolan. Dylan McElligott, Patrick Fahy, Tom Quinlan and Darragh Ryan all missed the Blitz due to one thing or another but it is hoped to have them for next weeks matches. Seamie Sheehan has joined the list of coaches at the club and is helping Tom and Sean on Friday evenings in Mountcoal and we are grateful to the lads for their help.

CROTTA UNDER 12 HURLING NEWS
Our under 12's took part in another u12 Blitz last Friday evening in Caherslee. Teams that took part were Duagh, Kenmare and Laune Rangers.
Crotta first played Kenmare and it was a tough battle with the ball in the middle third of the field for long periods. The teams were evenly enough matched and with adverse weather good hurling was difficult to achieve. Just before half-time however, Raymond Nolan took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored two excellent points and then a superb goal. As it was the weekend of the Todd Nolan Tournament (which Kerry won) it was the kind of magic the man himself would conjure up. The second half was end to end but failed to produce a score. Crotta 1-02 to Kenmare 0-00 was the full time score. In the second match Crotta played Duagh and due to the fact that Duagh had only ten players Crotta had to play only ten as well. Being a young team this does not suit us. Jordan Conway opened the scoring with a nice point. The hurling in this match was much better and their was chances at both ends. Crotta led at half time by 0-01 to 0-00. Duagh started the second half with purpose and a couple of frees gave them the lead. Crotta hit back with a Ciaran Flanagan goal. It was good to see Ciaran back and his hurling improved as the tournament went on. However Duagh finished the stronger and won the match 2-02 to Crotta 1-01.
Next up were Laune Rangers and Crotta's fringe players started this game. It was only minutes into the game when Darragh Sheehan struck for a goal. Darragh Regan was introduced and scored two great points. Jordan Conway also scored a nice point when he came on near the end. Full time Crotta 1-03 Laune Rangers 0-00.
It's on to Killarney (to be confirmed) next Friday evening for the next round of qualifiers and we all hope for a dry fine evening for the youngsters.
Training continues in Mountcoal every Friday evening at 6.45pm to 8pm. Thanks once again to Sean, Tom and all the lads who help.

MUNSTER MINOR HURLING BLITZ FOR THE TODD NOLAN MEMORIAL CUP
The Launch of Todd Nolan Hurling Minor Blitz took place last night 3rd April in Manor West Hotel, Tralee. Todd Nolan was a tremendous character and one of the greatest hurlers to play for Kerry. Todd played for Crotta and he was a legend in his own lifetime. Todd died at a young age having achieved as much on the field of play as any Kerry hurler could wish for:
He played in six senior County Hurling finals for his native Crotta.
He won a County Championship with Crotta in 1968
He won three All Ireland B Titles with Kerry in 1975, 1983 and 1986.
He was one of the few Kerry players to have played on A Munster Railway Cup team and did so in 1969.
It was appropriate that the first Munster Minor Hurling Competition hosted by Kerry be named after Todd. This competition was launched in The Manor West Hotel last night. The respect that Todd Nolan was held was evident from the big crowd from Crotta and all the hurling Clubs in North Kerry that attended.
Mr. Joe Walsh Hurling Officer from Kerry County Committee thanked everyone for coming and said that Todd would be delighted with the crowd of people that turned up to promote hurling. Mr. Jerome Conway Chairman of Kerry County Committee said that there is a great buzz in Kerry Hurling that has been lacking for some time and this competition would enhance the game further. He thanked The Munster Council for organising the competition and wished it every success.
The competition itself takes place on the Saturday April 12th and should be a great day for Kerry hurling when an Inter-divisional/Development Squad Blitz will be held in the county. This competition-The Todd Nolan Memorial cup has the imprimatur of the Kerry Co. Committee and the Munster Council.
Six hurling teams from four Munster counties will partake in the proceedings. Ballyheigue, Causeway and Lerrig will host the games and it expected that the hurling public will be highly entertained by young wielders of the camán. All these hurling men harbour ambitions to wear a county geansaí and will give of their almighty best. The Kerry boys are working hard in training and hopes are high that they will do themselves justice and do us proud. Hurling followers throughout the Kingdom will certainly look forward the occasion.
· Group A games will be played in Baile Thaidhg and the three teams in that group will contest for honours: the Kerry Minor Panel, Limerick City and West Limerick.
· The Group B teams of Tipperary, Waterford and Limerick under 17s will challenge each other for supremacy in Causeway. Mouth-watering contests are expected.
· At midday Kerry will play West Limerick (A: Ballyheigue) and Tipperary will take on Limerick under 17s (B: Causeway).
· Then, after a short sos and at 1 p.m., Limerick City and West Limerick will do battle (A: Ballyheigue) while Tipp. and Port Láirge will face each other (B: Causeway).
· And at 2 p.m. Kerry will play against the lads from Limerick City (A: Ballyheigue) and Limerick under 17s will challenge Waterford (B: Causeway).
· Three finals will then be held simultaneously, 3.30 p.m. being the prescribed time.
· The victors in each group will play each other in Causeway, the second best team in each group will fight another contest in Ballyheigue and the third teams will hurl against each other in Lerrig. 20 minutes per half will be played in the group matches and in the finals each half will last 25 nóiméad.
· The outright champions will receive an €800 Liston Sports' Gear Voucher and vouchers of lesser value will go to the second and third placed winning outfits.
· Ba cheart go mbeadh an-lá ag na hiománaithe óga.
April 12th should prove to be a good day's outing.
Best of to the Crotta players and their team mates who are on the Kerry Minor Hurling Squad, who will participated in Todd Nolan Hurling Minor Blitz this week-end: Shane Nolan, Aaron Sheehan, and Keith Hannifin.

CROTTA UNDERAGE HURLING
Last Friday evening,4th April our under 12's travelled to Killorglin to play Laune Rangers. Initially we were due to travel to Killarney to play in a four team blitz but due to a water logged pitch that was cancelled.
A panel of 23 player's, some parents and a number of supporters travelled by coach to the venue. It was decided to play two games. The first game involved the younger members of both Crotta and Laune Rangers panels. This was a ten a side match of ten mins half duration. Crotta started in whirlwind fashion and goals from Mark Egan (a fine ground strike), Darragh Sheehan and Barry Mahony points for them 2-01 to no score ahead. After Sean O'Donoghue found the roof of the net a short time later both he and Barry Mahony were replaced by Jack Glavin and Aoife Behan. Crotta proved too strong for the Laune Rangers team and had a convincing win.
The panel of younger members were: Adam O'Sullivan, Brandon Conway, Dominic Nolan, Mark Egan, Darragh Sheehan, Aoife Behan, Jack Glavin, Aaron Murnane, Dylan McElligott, Sean O'Donoghue, Tomas Quinlan, Barry Mahony, Colin Browne and Darragh Kennelly. All players played their part and it was good to get an outdoor game played. The main under 12 match followed shortly after and it was eleven a side. It was a 25 mins a half game and Crotta again started strongly. Darragh Regan was hurling superbly in midfield and supplied a constant supply of ball to the forwards. Most of his hard work went unrewarded due to a lack of intensity especially by the inside forward line. Midway through the half the deadlock was broken when Jordan Conway goaled with a good ground strike. David Behan was now hurling with great authority in the half back line and nothing was getting past him. From one of his many clearances Darragh Regan gained possession and he fired over a fine point. Crotta dominated the remainder of the half but just before half-time Laune Rangers broke up field and Barry Mahony was given no chance as the sliotar hit the back of his net.
The second half started the same as the first with Crotta in control and now they were backed by a lively breeze. Two unanswered points by Darragh Regan put Crotta up by 1-03 to 1-00. Regan was proving a right handful for Rangers and his long striking was a feature of the match. He was now partnered by Jordan Conway at midfield and Conway was getting through allot of work. He also scored a fine point but shortly after Laune Rangers registered their second goal. However Jordan Conway hit a long delivery towards the Rangers goal and it deceived the keeper to land in the net. Now it was Crotta 2-04 Laune Rangers 2-00. Sean O'Donoghue who had replaced Sean Gleasure opened his account with a nice point from out on the left. Aoife Behan, Darragh Sheehan, Colin Browne, and Adam O'Sullivan were all introduced at different stages in the second half. Adam O'Sullivan replaced Barry Mahony in goals and both players played really well after O'Sullivan pulled off a few great saves and cleared his lines well and Mahony showed great drive and determination which lifted his colleagues when moved to the half forward line. Raymond Nolan who came into the game near the end hand passed a ball to Barry Mahony who dispatched a quick ball to the forwards. Sean O'Donoghue controlled it and scored his second point of the game. Just before the finish whistle how fitting it was that man of the match Darragh Regan completed the scoring with his fourth point of the game.
It was great to get a victory on our first outing and with such a young team playing. Tom McElligott, Darragh Rayn and Ciaran Flanagan who were missing should all be available for out next round of fixtures.
Team and Scorers were: Barry Mahony, Brandon Conway, Patrick Fahy, Adrian Mahony, David Behan, Darragh Regan (0-4), Bill Keane, Tom Quinlan, Donnacha Brosnan, Sean Gleasure and Jordan Conway (2-1). Subs were Sean O'Donoghue (0-2), Darragh Sheehan, Aoife Behan, Adam O'Sullivan and Colin Browne.
Next round of games to be played this Friday evening at a venue to be arranged. Players and parents will be notified as soon as we get information.
Training for under 8 and under 10 will continue on Friday evenings in Mountcoal at 6.45pm.
Thanks to Tom Nolan and Sean Twomey for coaching last Friday night in the absence of Jerome, Paul and Francis.
All the players, coaches and Bord na Nog officers wish Francis a speedy recovery from his recent illness,
Registration: Any child who still is not registered can do so next Friday evening either at training or money can be given to Paul or Jerome at the under 12 match on Friday.

NEW DRINK - Never over the limit.
Scientists have developed a new alcoholic drink which never puts you over the limit no matter how much you drink. Isotopes which produce enzymes which mask the level of alcohol in Alkalyzers and blood tests mean that no matter how much you drink the test will never register above 50.
Chairman of the Rural Vintners Association Jimmy McGinnis said that this could herald the revival of the rural pub and breathe new life into rural communities.
It is believed that the drink which is said the have the strength and taste of lager and is provisionally called "Gales" has been released to about 200 outlets throughout Ireland.
The Competition Authority has ruled that the names of the outlets should not be released as it would give them an unfair trading advantage.
The drink is believed to be available in 17 Kerry pubs.

THE LATE TOMMY FITZMAURICE R.I.P
Crotta hurling folk especially those of the older generation were saddened to hear of the recent death of Tommy Fitzmaurice in New York.
Tommy was born in Ballyrehan, Lixnaw where he spent his youth. Having married early in life Tommy did not experience the joys of married life for long when death cruelly took his wife Nell O’Brien Keel, Lixnaw - leaving him with young boys Tom and Tim. Tommy later revealed that his interest in hurling provided a distraction and helped him to cope with the tragedy and the subsequent hardship that followed. Unemployment forced him to emigrate to America.
St. Patrick’s Day 1953 was particularly poignant day for him as he played for Ballyrehan in a Parish hurling league in Stack’s field before leaving for Shannon at half time. Tommy Fitzmaurice first played in the green and red jersey in the late forties and contested three county Seniors Hurling Finals 1950, 1951 &1952 excelling in all three. His name is forever linked with Crotta in those 3 championship campaigns. In the words of a contemporary he had grace, power determination allied to a wonderful natural skill and fierce will to win - on a par with any of the greats that donned the Crotta No. 6.
It is generally accepted that the emigration of 3 Ballyrehan neighbours - Tommy Fitzmaurice, J.P Harrington and John Doctor O’Connell along with Sean Gleasure and Denis Nolan brought an end to the glory days in Crotta. Unfortunately father time has taken its toll on the heroes of those campaigns and only a one third of those three championship teams are still with us. Incidentally his playing colleague John O’Connell still resides in New York.
Tommy carved out a new life for himself in New York where he spent many happy years. He married again he and his wife who predeceased him with 6 children. He continued to hurl in his adopted city - first with Limerick and then with Kerry when that club was established. Tommy was honoured by the Kerry club at special function in Gaelic Park, New York in 1993. At home he was due to receive the Crotta Hurling club Hall of Fame Award for 2008. Tommy Fitzmaurice’s sons Tom and the late Tim won U-14 Country Championship with Crotta in 1959 and were later members of the minor teams which contested two county final in 1963 and 1964 before emigrating to England.
To his family, relatives and friends we offer our deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace.
For the record- Nine members of the 1950, 1951 & 1952 Crotta hurling teams namely Denny Nolan, Tommy Conway, Monty Mc Elligott, John McCarthy, Matt Stack, Billy Stack, James McCarthy, Tomasin Nolan and John P. Harrington - now have grandsons, granddaughters wearing the Green and Red. Is this an omen for better days ahead?

LABOUR AREA MEETING
At a recent Area meeting for the Kilflynn, Abbeydorney branches of the Labour Party held in Abbey Tavern, Abbeydorney.
The following issues of concern to the North Kerry members were highlighted and discussed at length.
Firstly the Labour Party condemns and opposed the proposed unjust increase in the connection fees to existing sewerage schemes in towns and villages. The proposal as it stands and is now on display is to increase the fee from €3,000 to €8,000 a major increase of 275 per cent. All interested especially new home owners should contact the Kerry County Council any make their opposition know.
Secondly the situation at Tarbert E,S.B Generating Station is a matter of grave concern. Privatisation is being put forward with the loss of 50 jobs at the plant. This deal is unacceptable to the Labour Party and owing to the high rate of unemployment in North Kerry 15 per cent any further lost losses must be avoided and vigorously opposed.
The meeting was chaired by Listowel County Councillor Mr Pat Leahy and the following Area organisers attended Dan Galvin, Gerry Mason, Donal P Murphy and Arthur John Spring.

KERRY FOOTBALLERS
A 64th minute penalty miss by MJ Tierney proved costly for Laois as they fell to a 0-12 to 0-16 defeat to visitors Kerry in their NFL Division One clash at Portlaoise on Saturday night 29th March. In front of some 5,000 fans, Bryan Sheehan cracked over ten points, two from play as Kerry got their league hopes back on track. Laois played well in the opening stages of the match but Kerry’s physical edge soon began to become apparent and they were level at 0-4 apiece after 19 minutes. The Kingdom pushed on and thanks, in part, to Sheehan’s accuracy proceeded to achieve a 0-8 to 0-5 interval lead.
But with the wind at their backs on the restart, Laois improved considerably with Billy Sheehan and Colm Parkinson pointing to narrow the gap to just one point with 39 minutes on the clock. An exceptional long range from Bryan Sheehan had Kerry back in the driving seat and after Tierney saw his spot kick saved by Kingdom keeper Kieran Cremin, Laois saw their fading hopes slowly die
