NEWS AUGUST 2008

26th August
BACK TO SCHOOL
Yes it is that dreaded time of year again for all our young students as they prepare once again to return to school after the long summer holidays. The what holidays I hear you say? Well yes despite the atrocious weather conditions all through the summer, we are once again back to that time when it is time to begin a new educational year all over again. St. Teresa's National School , Kilflynn, reopens on Monday 1st September at 9.00 p.m.
After the long summer break, the first week of September can bring mixed emotions for parents and children alike, especially when children are entering the school environment for the first time or joining a new school.
We wish the best of luck to all local Students who return to school after their break and best wishes to the young Children who commences School for the first time.

The Late Pat O'Neill R.I.P, Castletown, Kilflynn

REMEMBERING A FRIEND
In the last couple of weeks Kilflynn lost one of its most loved and thought after characters in Pat O Neill. Pat moved to the village in 1974 not long after taking up a post in Kerry Group. He quickly acquainted himself with his neighbours and made friends with all who had the luck to cross paths with him. Pat enjoyed a very successful career with Kerry Group and climbed the ladder to become their chief engineer and was a driving force in making the organisation the success it is.
Pat always had a deep love of sport and went through thick and thin in support of his beloved Limerick where he hailed from. It was through this love of his county that he parted a pretty penny to the late Jimmy King with whom the two always had a bet if even just to share a few pints at the winners expense.
Four years ago the greyhound people of the area embarked on setting up the now well established Kilflynn Coursing Club. Pat was the founding chairman and was very proud of what the club has achieved in such a short period. No stranger to success on the coursing field himself Pat and his wife Jean won their first trial stake in partnership with Pat and Joan Herbert. with Peas and Jeas back in 1987. Pat was involved in the training of this dog especially the walking even if man and dog only made it to the local for a pint and returning an hour later leading the others to believe that miles had been covered. But Pat had to wait a while again till 2004 when he won another trial stake with Ixthapa Offleg. A dog Pat had some fun with as he also won a cup in Millstreet as well.
Pat, In the hearts off all who you knew you will be forever remembered. A true gentleman but most of a true friend. Rest in peace.

ALL IRELAND AMERICA FOOTBALL
A Kilflynn Man returned home with glory recently after being part of the team captured that won the 2008 All-Ireland America Football Championships.

This is the second year that the team have brought the winning title back to UL. The five north Kerry players joined the American Football team when they began studying in UL and they showed all that indeed the skills of Kerry’s sports stars stretch far beyond the GAA.

UNDER 10 NEWS
Last Tuesday evening Abbeydorney U10's travelled to Dromakee to play Crotta in an U10 match. This challenge match was arranged to give members of the panel who had not played much in the two under 10 blitz wins some game experience. There were one or two exceptions to make up the 11 a side. The team lined out as follows:Sean O'Donoghue, John Quilter, Dominic Nolan, Eamon Rohan, Brian O'Connell, Killian Mullins, Padraig Dillon, Nathan Fahy, Darragh O'Donoghue, Mark Egan, Darragh Behan, Subs: Dylan McElligott for Dominic Nolan Darragh Stack for Nathan Fahy Greg Leahy for Killian Mullins
Mark Egan gave Crotta the perfect start scoring a goal from close range after good work by Padraig Dillon. This was soon cancelled out as Abbeydorney also raised a green flag. Half time score was a goal each.
On the resumption O’Dorney scored a point to take the lead but with Dominic Nolan, Darragh O'Donoghue, Brian O'Connell, and Padraig Dillon hurling with authority Crotta were applying a lot of pressure. Killian Mullins and John Quilter were getting through a lot of work too. The pressure told midway through the second half when a great Dylan McElligott clearance was controlled by Darragh O'Donoghue whose shot was saved but a combination of Mark Egan and Darragh Behan forced the sliotar over the line. Crotta dominated proceedings from then on and just before fulltime Darragh O'Donoghue completed the scoring when he fired an unstoppable shot past a helpless keeper to leave the full time score Crotta 3-00 Abbeydorney 1-01. Thanks to Abbeydorney especially Timmy Spillane for travelling to Dromakee. Hopefully before the month is out we will play a return game in Abbeydorney.

STAGS ON TOUR: Ciaran Lehane (Red T-Shirt) of Kanturk, County Cork on his Stag party with some of his friends enjoying food and beverages in Parker’s Pub, on Saturday evening 26th July.

UNDER 11 NEWS
Last Wednesday was a historic evening in Dromakee when Crotta's U11 team took to the field to play Ballyheigue in Div 1 of the county league. This match was originally fixed for the previous Friday night but following a request from Ballyheigue, Crotta agreed to change the fixture. We accommodated the Ballyheigue club and what we got in return was unfairness. The Kilmoyley club who were to provide the ref for the original fixture were notified of the cancellation but were not notified about the new date. This meant that as no official ref turned up it was then a travelling ref.
The travelling ref on the night made some really strange decisions and to most people did not ref the match fairly. To treat young lads like this is a disgrace.
To discuss the match which should be the main talking point Crotta hurled superbly against all the odds. Darragh Regan with 3 points(1 from a free) and a neatly worked Sean O'Donoghue point put Crotta four points to the good after 15 mins. Ballyheigue then scored a goal and a point to tie the scores. Crotta hit a purple patch soon after and man of the match Raymond Nolan scored 1-01 without reply. Raymond evaded two defenders and then placed the ball beyond the keeper. Jordan Conway tacked on another point before Ballyheigue goaled again. Sean O'Donoghue then worked a bit of space to split the uprights. Halftime Crotta 1-07 Ballyheigue 2-01. ON the resumption two bizarre decisions changed the match. Firstly Adrian Mahony was adjudged to have over carried which led to a goal to Ballyheigue and then a line ball which was played from one Ballyheigue player to another even though they were 3 yards apart and should have been a throw in was deemed by the ref to be retaken. This also resulted in score for Ballyheigue. Crotta soon levelled scores when Jamie O'Sullivan collected the sliotar, swivelled and sent it between the posts. Ballyheigue then finished with two goals. Final score Crotta 1-08 Ballyheigue 5-02. On a positive note Crotta scored 1-07 from play. They had no choice as frees for the home side were a scarce commodity. In one passage of play Sean O'Donoghue was bearing down on goals when he was hacked down from behind and play was waved on! Crotta had great performances from David Behan, Barry Mahony, Darragh Regan, Adrian Mahony, Raymond Nolan, Jamie O’Sullivan and Sean O'Donoghue.

THE LATE BILL FULLER
William J. (Bill) Fuller, of Las Vegas, passed away late Monday night, July 28, 2008, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 91 years old. Born in Glenoe, Listowel, he moved to London as a young man, starting work in construction. As his business grew, he expanded into entertainment and nightlife, opening a series of ballrooms and hotels in England and Ireland, among them The Electric Ballroom in Camdentown, which remains popular to this day. "Bill" Fuller moved to New York City in the 1950's, and reopened City Center in Manhattan as a premier concert hall and ballroom. As with many of his venues, City Center became a haven for Irish immigrants young and old. Bill relocated to Las Vegas in the late 1960's, where he became involved in the mining industry in Western Nevada. Bill is survived by his daughters, Mary, Jane, Terry and Kate; his sons, Stephen and Sean; and his grandchildren, Ciara, Kevin, Christina, Una Leigh, Tess and Ronan, his extended family and friends, to whom we offer the sincere sympathy of the community. Memorial services was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4, at the Guardian Angel Cathedral, 302 Cathedral Way, in Las Vegas.
A Memorial Mass will be held for him at St Michael's Church, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry on Monday, August 18, 2008 at 12 noon, after which his ashes will be laid to rest in Kilfeighney Cemetery, Lixnaw. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
