VILLAGE RENEWAL PROJECT
Kilflynn is a lovely village which has a strong sense of community spirit and pride as well as many unique attractions such as the St. Columba’s Heritage Centre. However due to its prime location, Kilflynn is fast becoming an appealing resident choice for many commuters. Centrally located in the north of the county; it is the perfect base for those working in the larger surrounding towns such as Tralee and Listowel.
Kerry County Council had identified urgent restoration works to be carried out within the Village in order to enhance the natural beauty of it and to meet the needs of this fast developing village. In the spring of 2006 Kerry County Council received funding by means of a Village Renewal Grant from the Department of the Environment & Local Government. This funding in the form of €133,000 was supported by the European Union Structural Grant along with additional development levies.
After consultation with representatives of the local community; areas of priority such as replacement of footpaths, under-grounding of over head wires and provision of public lighting were identified. The construction and restoration of footpaths and the provision of public lighting will ensure safe access for the community and improve the visual character of the village.
After a tendering process, Chris Gilbert Construction Company was appointed as the project contractor and was supervised by Kerry County Council Engineer, Maurice Costello. Construction began in September 2006 and was completed in approximately 10 weeks.
The following is a list of the works completed:
80m of new footpaths constructed Provision of associated roadside drainage works 500m2 of new & old footpaths resurfaced
550m Éircom ducting laid to accommodate the under-grounding of overhead services 520m E.S.B ducting laid to accommodate the under-grounding of overhead services Provision of 10 new decorative public lights.
Éircom, E.S.B Networks and ESB Public Lights are in the process of under-grounding their utility wires. It is hoped that all these works will be completed by the end of January 2007.
The next phase of the village improvement works is the proposed resurfacing of the village roads. It is hoped that Kerry County Council will receive the appropriate and necessary grants to carry out these works in mid 2007.
