KILFLYNN CANCER SUPPORT GROUP ANNUAL TABLE QUIZ
The Kilflynn Cancer Support Group are presently organising their ninth annual Table Quiz in aid of Cancer services in Kerry. The quiz will be held in Parker’s Pub and Herbert’s Bar, Kilflynn on Friday night, December 28th at 9.00 p.m. The group was originally set up by Fr. Pat O'Donnell in 2004. Pat is a cancer survivor and came up with the idea of holding a fundraising quiz in Kilflynn at Christmas time. Even though cancer affects every household in some way the support for this fundraiser exceeded all expectations. The success of the first quiz ensured that it would become an annual event. As well as being a great fundraiser it has now turned into a great social occasion each Christmas with the same faces returning each year. It is wonderful to see those who live away from Kilflynn supporting the quiz with their families at a time of year which is all about giving, sharing and spending time together. Even though Fr. Pat is now PP in Milltown he always returns for the occasion and everyone feels it wouldn’t be the same without him.
To date the small community of Kilflynn has made a substantial contribution in providing added care to cancer patients and their families and to date has raised over €46,000. Last year the proceeds were divided between Recovery Haven, Kerry Hospice and Kerry Cancer Support and these groups will be the beneficiaries again this year.
The night is not all about answering the brain testing questions set by local man John O’Flaherty, there are also numerous auctions and raffles. Amongst the raffle items this year are the signed autobiographies of David Norris and rugby international, John ‘The Bull’ Hayes. The organisers would be grateful to receive any unwanted Christmas presents so that they could auction them on the night; all donations can be handed in to Parker’s Pub, Herbert’s Bar and shop or John O’Flaherty.

William King and Ned Breen. John O’Flaherty added ‘this was a unique day for Kilflynn, hundreds of past pupils gathering, many of whom hadn’t met for fifty or sixty years, it was an evocative day, a day for memories and chat; I think this DVD catches the atmosphere very well and it would certainly be a great Christmas present for those past pupils living away from Kilflynn, many of whom told me it was a day they would never forget.’ The DVD is for sale in the school as well as in the local shops and pubs for only 15 euro and copies of the School’s history are also available to buy.
