SANTAS AND SANTOS GAME
On Wednesday 27th December 2006 two of the communities sporting clubs participated in a friendly soccer match in the meadow grounds Crotta.
The hurling club team was made up of both past and present day hurlers, while the Santos team was made up of more seasoned soccer players.
This has become an annual event since Kilflynn Santos soccer club was established in 1999, and the game is always played in good spirit and sometimes used as a means to shed some of the excess Christmas pounds.
The game was played in front of a sizable attendance and in ideal conditions. The match refreshments were provided by both Parkers and Herbert’s bar, all the essential items a modern day professional needs during a game of this magnitude, water, cider, whiskey, brandy to name a few.
Photographer on the day was Danny Caffrey, and after both teams posed for the media the game got under way. From the off Santos went about the task of insuring there unbeaten streak reamed intact, although played in good humour both teams weren’t giving an inch and tackles were flying.
In the early stages the Santa’s team was dealt a huge blow when defender Tom Blonde Mc Elligott was forced to retire through injury. However former Crotta hurler Declan Fuller came off the bench with baton in hand to replace Blonde and played a stormer. Santos piled on the pressure and eventually took the lead with a strike from Kerry Hurler Andrew Keane to beat Brendan Mahony in the Santa goal. Moments later the Santas who by now had perfected the counter attack were level with a beautiful strike from Francis Keane from 30 yards.
The half time whistle was music to the ears of both teams who longed for the special refreshments. After some words from the managers and a medicinal shot or two the teams resumed their positions. The Santas team had more of the early position in the second half but were caught out when Andrew Keane gave the Santos the lead once more. The Santa piled on the pressure coming closed in numerous occasions. Just when it looked like it was over Shane Herbert pulled one back from the penalty Spot and the teams were level.
The ref Paddy Weir blew the full time whistle and it was the lottery of a penalty shoot out that was to decide the outcome. It was decided that in the spirit of the game each panel member would have a penalty. After 15 penalties each, the outcome rested solely in the hands of the team managers. Up first was the Santa’s managers Mike the Bomber Parker whose strike went narrowly wide. So this was it, after months of long dark winter night training in the bars of north Kerry, the game was to be decided by Paddy Weir. Paddy stepped up sporting a pair of new state of the art wellies, however his powerful shot helped by the steel toe capped boots, was no match for the Man of the match and Santa keeper Brendan Mahony.
So the game finished in a draw, which was a fair result. An enjoyable day and night was had by all.
A special thanks to Mike Barry for the use of the pitch, to both bars for the vital refreshment and to both sets of players for a clean and enjoyable contest.
Paul Shanahan presented the Man of the Match award to Brendan Mahony after the game in Parker’s Lounge Bar.
Roll on 2007…. Kilflynn Santos team: Jonathan Caffrey, J.P Mc Elligott, Aiden Scanlon, Hughie Keenan, David Cronin, Colin Curran, Andrew Keane, Denis Sayers, Brendan Keane, Gary Hogan, Colm Mc Elligott, Martin Daughton, Gavin Foley and Diarmuid Nolan. The Santa panel was as follows: Brendan Mahony, Pa Quille, Declan Fuller, Denis Connell, Tom Blondie Mc Elligott, Richard Nolan, Karl Shanahan, Mikey Barry, Paul Shanahan, Pete Mc Grath, Patrick Connell, John Edwards, Shane Herbert, Ronan Falvey, Francis Keane, Eric Knott, Fergus O’ Sullivan and Mike Parker.

KERRY HURLERS
The Kerry Senior Hurlers were defeated by Clare in the Waterford Crystal Cup quarter final played in diabolical weather conditions at Lerrig on Sunday last on 1-05 to 0-06 final scoreline. The Crotta hurling Club were represented by Andrew Keane at Corner Back, and Matt Lynch on the sub bench.

SANTOS WINS AGAIN
Kilflynn Santos continued their good run in the league with a 2-1 nil home win against Ballyheigue.
Playing into a strong wind in the first half Kilflynn dominated the play and when Colm Mc Elligott put in a speculated cross after 15 minutes it fooled the Ballyheigue Keeper and went all the way to the net. Gary Hogan made no mistake after 25 minutes to put the home side 2 up after a mix up in the Ballyheigue defence. With the wind at their backs in the second half Kilflynn failed to extend their lead despite creating several good chances. The game finished 2-0, which makes it 8 out 8 wins in the leagues for Santos

BEST WISHES TO DEIRDRE
I would like to extend very best wishes to Deirdre Walsh on her new appointment with Radio Kerry which she takes up in the New Year. Deirdre had done a great job with The Kerryman of the past 2 decades and she will be greatly missed by everyone that reads the paper. She was the brainchild behind the get together of local correspondents which took place a couple of months ago and she done a lot to emphasise the valuable contribution that local correspondents made to The Kerryman Newspaper. She served the paper well in many capacities and gave very good coverage to news stores from the North Kerry area. On any occasions that I was in contact with her she was very helpful and co – operative and was always available to help out in any way she could. Locals look forward to hearing her on the airways in the very near future.
