CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE CUP
On Monday the 28th of December over 70 players from Kilflynn and the surrounding areas participated in the second annual indoor 6 a side soccer event. The tournament was held in St Senans G.A.A Hall, Mountcoal and got under way at 12 noon. There were 12 teams consisting of 6 players each battling it out for the winner’s trophy and cash prize of €600. The twelve teams already knew their opponents in each of the three round games as the draw was made in Parkers Pub one week prior to the tournament. The games lasted 10 minutes and huge credit must go to all participating teams as there was very little delay between games which was a big factor in the success of the competition. After the third round of games JP McElligott’s team were top of the table with Richard Nolan team lying second. This meant that they were straight into the semi finals. The other semi final positions would be decided following the play off games were last year winners Garry Curran played the home side Sean T O’ Connell team and Tom O Donoghue team played Diarmuid McKenna team. Both games were very close with the Sean T O’ Connell and team along with Diarmuid McKenna team progressing to the semi finals. The first semi final saw Sean T O Connell team take on Richard Nolan’s team were penalties decided the outcome with Richard Nolan’s team coming out on top. The second semi final was contested between J. P McElliogott’s team and Darmuid McKenna team, with team McElliogott’s coming out victories.
The final was a 20 minute game, and was contested by last years beaten finalist J.P McElligott and the youngest team in the tournament Richard Nolan. The game was played in front of a sizable enthusiastic crowd and they were treated to a close entertaining game. The score line at half time was nil all with no quarter asked or given by the players on the court. However as with the nature of indoor sport and the fatigue factor set in the goals came in the second half. Four goals in all were scored in the second ten minute period with the Keane brothers of Andrew (2) and Francis (1) on the mark for team McElligott, with Philip Twomey netting for team Nolan. However in was team McElligott how took the honors winning on a score line of 3-1 and in doing so lay to rest the burden of the beaten finalist last year.
The runners up cup along with €300 was presented to Richard Nolan by Paul Shanahan, Richard in turn presented his team mates of Sean Weir, Jonathan Caffery, Eoin O’ Sullivan, Shane McAuliffe and Philip Twomey with their trophies. The winner’s cup and €600 was presented to J.P McElligott, and J.P presented his team mates of Andrew Keane, Francis Keane, Mike Lynch, Denis Sayers, and Aidan Scanlon with the trophies. The player of the tournament went to Shane Nolan and the golden boot with eight goals went to Darren O’ Brien. A special word of thanks to John Howard, St. Senan’s GAA club and referee James Bailey and my fellow tournament organizer J.P McElligott for all their help and support on the day.
