BALLYTHEFIRESIDE
Is a local literary initiative by Lisselton man Brendan Hegarty. It covers the GAA and North Kerry, and of course the county football teams down the years. It is a mixture of everything from light hearted localish tales to some really remarkable poetry, and it can only be recommended.
“The Kerry Ingredient” is a pure classic, using our footballers to explain what it is that makes Kerry folk so different to ‘other races of people’. There is also a version with ‘a fleck of an Gaeilge’ while “Different Kings of Kingdom” is a shorter poem on the same subject. There are significant works about Micheál O'Muireartaigh, "Teenage Kicks from an ass upset by Bishop Casey", “Two Beautiful Kerrymen” (one being Páidí Ó'Sé), John B Keane, “The Heart of a Kerryman” (the repairing of Brendan Kennelly’s literary heart), Thierry Henri’s escape from Lisselton and “Trojan Horsepower” which is another classic, almost a book in itself about Mickey, Tim and Tadhg Kennelly.
The Ballydonoghue ‘Polo Grounds 3’ of Mick Finucane, Eddie Dowling and Gus Cremin are not forgotten and this coincides with their being honoured by Michael O’Muireartaigh at The Kerry Supporters Club Annual Social last Saturday night.
“Looking Lucky Crossing Winning Lines” is a truly heart capturing story of a Kerry child in Crumlin Hospital and the decisive role he plays in winning an All Ireland final for us. What happens when the team visit him on the Monday morning after the match will split your heart in two. If you don’t have access to a PC then you should definitely get someone to print this one out for you.
“Highways of Boys” is a thought provoking poem that endeavours to connect with our young drivers in a way that they might understand. It has been written with consultation from The Road Safety Authority and the A&E Surgeon you see in their TV advert. This piece actually resulted in Brendan being invited to an audience with President McAleese at The National Rehabilitation Hospital last December.
All this and much more is available, all without restriction, at http://ballythefireside.blogspot.com/ and can also be found if you Google “BALLYTHEFIRESIDE”. Any feedback to TheKerryIngredient@Gmail.com
