COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR SOUP KITCHEN AT CHRISTMAS
In the run up to the Christmas rush, several business owners were delighted to be able to donate to people who were looking for a bit of help after The Soup Kitchen was featured in local media in November. The Soup Kitchen was set up in October 2012 by Collette Price and Dawn Roberts at Teach an tSolais, Ashe St and opens its doors every Saturday from 12 to 2. Indeed such was the response to the article that several businesses including Parkers Pub, Herberts Bar and Prims Restaurant in Kilflynn along with Tim O’Halloran Butcher, Lerrig , Leah’s Gourmet Foods, Ballybunion and Terry’s Butchers, Tralee very generously donated cooked and ready to go food to the Soup Kitchen. Such was the will to support the Soup Kitchen that Karen from Prims Restaurant has very generously agreed to help out on an ongoing basis.
We are also very grateful to Portman Travel, Bank of Ireland Tralee Branch, Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School and 7th Kerry Cub Scouts, Dingle who held food collections and with lots of donations from a very generous public meant that people received a little extra over the Christmas period.
The volunteers of the Soup Kitchen are constantly amazed at this kind of generosity and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributes to keeping the kitchen going especially A local Hotel, The Catering Dept in IT Tralee, Horans Fruit & Veg, Barrys Bakery, Spar Oakpark, Seamus O’Sullivan and the committee of Teach an tSolais for providing the great facilities needed to maintain this much needed service. Please support all of these businesses when you can. Thank you all.

KERRY HURLERS
A youthful Kerry Senior hurling team gave a good account of themselves in the Waterford Crystal cup quarter final before 357 supporters at Austin Stack’s Park, Tralee on Sunday 19th January. The visitors led by 0-09 to 0-03 at the interval break, it was only in the final 15 minutes that Tipperary class told, played in horrific weather conditions, with Noel McGrath and Padraic Maher coming off the bench for Tipperary.
Nine Kerry players making their debut and only 4 of last year's Christy Ring Team so hopefully they will continue to develop. The Crotta hurling club was well represented on the Kerry team by Sean Weir who had a man of the match performance at wing-back and was chosen on the Hogan Stand Hurling Team of the week (5. Sean Weir (Kerry) Weir put in a tireless shift as Kerry put it up to Tipperary for 55 minutes of their Waterford Crystal Cup encounter in Tralee.) and Shane Nolan was Kerry Top scorer hitting five points from frees. While Tipp Legend Eoin Kelly landed 1-8 for the Premier side, final score 2-16 to 0-8. Well done to Sean and Shane who both acquitted themselves admirably and great credit to their Kerry team mates. Munster rugby player J.J Hanrahan pictured at the Kerry Hurling All Stars Awards 2013 on Saturday night 5th January with Kilflynn ladies Anne Marie Sheehan, Maura Leen, Emma Hayes, Helena Brennan, Jenny Marshall and Sandra Sheehan.

KERRY HURLING ALL STAR CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM
The Kerry Hurling Championship All Stars were announced at a function in Parker's lounge Bar, Kilflynn on Saturday night 4th January where a packed venue included the 45 nominated players and special guests Kerry's All-Ireland winning football captain Johnny Culloty in 1969 and Munster Rugby Player and Currow native JJ Hanrahan.
Johnny Culloty won five All Ireland Senior football medals along with an All Ireland Junior hurling medal, a Senior County Championship and four Division Two National Hurling League medals in what was a long and distinguished career as a dual player in the county. Recalling some of the lighter moments in his hurling career he highlighted also the hurling strongholds which existed in Tralee, Killarney, and Kenmare/Kilgarvan.
JJ Hanrahan is currently establishing himself as an out-half with huge potential in the red of Munster, having progressed through the Irish Schools team, the Munster Academy and Ireland's Under 20s.
Indeed, at the 2012 Junior World Cup in which Ireland had wins over England, France and South Africa, Hanrahan was one of three nominees for the Player of the Tournament. At the start of what looks like being a long and distinguished career he spoke of the need for supreme dedication and sacrifices while always remaining very much an integral part of the workings of the team group.
The concept for the All Stars was initiated by Mike O’Halloran, a former manager of Kerry Senior and Minor hurling teams, and was supported financially by seven of Kerry's hurling clubs, Mike and Geraldine Parker, Brennan Licenced Hauliers, Declan Fuller at Bulmers, Eamon Ferris of EF Singns, Garveys Supermarket, Tralee, J.J. Bonn at Nash Berverages, Heineken and J.P Hogan Videos.
Interestingly the final selection contained many of Kerry's finest young hurling talent, which augurs extremely well for the future of hurling in the county, including the Lixnaw midfielder Brendan Brosnan who was honoured with the Young Player of the Year award, confined to Under 21 players. The Senior accolade went to Darren Dineen of St Brendans.
The 2013 ALL STAR SELECTION: Martin Stackpoole (Lixnaw); Fergus Carroll (Causeway), Eamonn Corridan (St. Brendan's), Conor Flaherty (St. Brendan's); Tommy Barrett (Causeway), Darren Dineen (St. Brendan's), Rory Horgan (St. Brendan's); Brendan Brosnan (Lixnaw), Shane Brick (Kilmoyley); Cian Hussey (St. Brendan's), Daniel Collins (Kilmoyley), Paul McGrath (Causeway); James Flaherty (Lixnaw), Ricky Heffernan (Lixnaw) and John Egan (St. Brendan's). Congratulations and well done to the 15 players who were picked on the 2013 team also to the players who were nominated. The presentations were followed by plenty of lovely food provided by Prim's Restaurant, Kilflynn and Sonny Egan entertained the guest on the night. It was a great occasion when all of Kerry's hurling community gathered to pay tribute to the season’s finest Championship hurlers and one which will surely be continued and become a permanent feature on Kerry's sporting and social calendar. MCs for the evening were Mike O’Halloran and Timmy Sheehan.

KERRY HURLERS
The Kerry Senior hurlers got their season off on a winning note on Sunday 5th January at Staker Wallace GAA club pitch in Kilbreedy West, Kilmallock in a Hurling Challenge against Limerick Under 21's, on the final score of Kerry 3-15 to Limerick 3-10. The Crotta Hurling club was well represented on the Kerry team by Sean Weir (wing back) who made his County senior debut and by Shane Nolan (Wing Forward). Proceeds from the game will go to the benefit fund for former Limerick minor and U21 hurler Stephen O'Halloran, who requires a liver transplant after being diagnosed with cancer of the liver last summer. In spite of this, the 36-year-old played for his club Bruree against Murroe-Boher in the Limerick SHC as recently as August 2. O'Halloran was a key member of the Bruree side that won the Limerick SHC title in 2006, scoring 0-11 of their tally in a 1-16 to 1-15 victory over Patrickswell in the county final. Stephen is a nephew of Patrick and Tim O’Halloran, Kilflynn village. The game was Ciaran Carey's first in charge of the Limerick U21s
