ALL-IRELAND VICTORY

Pride of this week’s notes goes to Crotta players Philip Twomey, David Galvin, Matt Lynch and Darren Twomey who were members of the victorious Kerry Minor Hurling Team that captured the All Ireland Minor B Championship title at Claughen, Limerick on Sunday 30th July on the Score of Kerry 1-9 Westmeath 0-10. Westmeath led at half time 0-8 to 0-3. Both Philip Twomey and David Galvin were solid in defence for Kerry, with Matt Lynch coming off the sub bench and scored an important point. Darren Twomey was Sub.

In the curtain raiser game Kerry under 16 hurling team defeated Westmeath in All-Ireland U16 B Hurling Quarter Final: Kerry 3-7 Westmeath 0-5. Crotta’s Shane Nolan came on as sub on the victories team.

ACTIVE RETIRED OUTING
The Abbeydorney/Kilflynn Active Retired Group will have an outing on Wednesday 2nd August to Kilkee, Co. Clare via Tarbert Car Ferry. Coach leaving Abbeydorney Community Hall at 11.00 a.m. For further information phone Noreen at 7135831.

GOLF
Abbeydorney Golf Society recently held an outing in Tipperary Golf Club, which is the home club of our Captain Mike Fuller. The format was a fourball betterball and on a scorching hot day the scoring matched the weather.

The winners of the weekly Darts Doubles Tournament, in Parker’s Lounge Bar on Saturday night 29th July were: M. Fealy and S. Nolan who defeated Joe Twomey and Paud Twomey in the final. The winners received a leg of lamb each. The weekly Darts Doubles Tournament will continue on Saturday night. Names must be in for the draw at 10.15 p.m.

KERRY HURLERS
The Crotta hurling club was represented by Patrick Quill on the Kerry under 21 hurling team that were beat by Laois in the All Ireland B U21 Hurling Championship on the final score of 0-18 to 1-11 in Limerick on Wednesday12th July. Patrick made his senior debut against Carlow in The Christy Ring Cup on Saturday 15th July. : Carlow 1-22 Kerry 3-11 Venue: Carlow
Minor All-Ireland B Semi Final: Kerry 0-7 Wicklow 0-3 Venue Borrisokane.
Masters Hurling Competition: Limerick 1-12 Kerry 2-5, on Saturday 15th July in Abbeydorney. Crotta’s Jerome O‘Sullivan had an outstanding game at midfield; the Kerry team is managed by two hurling stalwarts Sonny Egan (Crotta) and Jimmy O‘Sullivan (Ballyduff).

CHRISTY RING CUP
The Kerry Senior Hurlers retained their Christy Ring Cup status after a 2-19 to 1-07 victory in the relegation final Play-Off: at Cusack Park Ennis on Saturday 22nd July. The Kingdom was always in control of this encounter with Roscommon.
Crotta Players on the team were Andrew Keane at wing back scored a point from 70 yards and Patrick Quill played well after coming on as a sub.

WELCOME BABY CILLIAN
Congratulation to baby Cillian David Hussey, Cappa, Kilflynn who was christened at St. Mary’s Church, Kilflynn on Sunday 30th July by Fr. Jack Fitzgerald p.p. Cillian was joined by his parents, Anne and Mark. Her grandparents Joan and Pat Hussey and Kathleen and Pat Tierney. Cillian’s godparents are Hilda Hussey and David Horan.

NIGHT AT THE DOGS
The Crotta Hurling Club held a Family night at the dogs on Saturday night 22nd July, at Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee it was a great success with a large turnout and was enjoyed by the young and the not so young. Many thanks to all the ticket sellers, race sponsors, advertisers and everyone who was involved in making the night an outstanding success. Proceeds of the night will be used to erect a hurling wall on the Club’s grounds at Dromakee. A hurling wall is an important aid towards developing the hurling skills of young girls and boys.

HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP
Crotta Senior hurlers are in action against Kilmoyley in the quarter final of this years A.I.B County Senior Hurling Championship quarter final on Saturday 12th August in Austin Stack’s Park, Tralee at 6.00 p.m. The 2006 County Hurling Championship Quarter Final draw is as follows:

UNDER 8
On Thursday Evening 27th July, Crotta under 8 Hurling Team, travelled to Ballyheigue to play the local team. Crotta started very well and scored a goal thought Jack Mc Kenna, Crotta had numerous other chances but failed to capitalise on their possession and in the second half their paid dearly as Ballyheigue eventually got on top. A good work for the young Crotta players and valuable experience being gained.

UNDER 10
An under 10 hurling Blitz took place in Ardfert Sports Field on Saturday 22nd July, Crotta under 10 competed for the Donal O’Flaherty Memorial Trophy and were in the group that contained Ardfert (The Eventual Winners), Kilmoyley, Lixnaw and Duagh.
Crotta played four games; they won one, drew one, lost two but played very well in all games.
The following was the Crotta team:

Backs: Patrick Fahy, Adrian Mahony, Sean O’Donoghue,
Midfielders: Sean Gleasure, Tom Mc Elligott (the Village) Raymond Nolan,

Subs Dylan Mc Elligott and Shane Conway.
Jordan Conway and Tom Mc Elligott got all Crotta Scores in the Tournament. Adrian Conway and Patrick Fahy played brilliant in Defence, Sean Gleasure has been the most improved hurler in the past couple of months and has great potential, his cousins Sarah Browne only took up hurling a week ago and has already played well in four games. Jordan Conway is playing to be a lethal forward and only needs half a chance. The younger players, Brandon Conway, Sean O’Donoghue, Raymond Nolan, Donnacha Brosnan, Dylan Mc Elligott all had their moments and gained valuable experience.
Crotta under 10 mentors would like to thank Ardfert Hurling Club for looking after them so well on the day, It was an excellently run Tournament and the Crotta players , supporters and parents were catered for.

BIRTHDAY PARTY
The Party hats were out in Parker’s Lounge Bar, Kilflynn on Friday 21st July when a well know character Sean Healy, Turbid, Ardfert celebrated his 60th Birthday. Sean and his guests enjoyed a barbeque and refreshments and everyone were kept in high spirits by the fine live musical entertainment which was provided by Fiddlers Green, Gene O Sullivan, Ray Fahy and Jim O Connor also entertaining the guest were Maurice Moore, Nicholas Scollard, and Jimmy Duff. Also celebrating their birthday were Sean's Sons Timmy and Tommy.

CROTTA
U-8’S: Crotta played their first game at under 8 level in Dromakee on Thursday evening last. Abbeydorney were the visitors and both team provided excellent entertainment. Crotta were victorious at the end of a very exciting game. Scorers for Crotta were Jack McKenna, Sean O'Donoghue, Brandon Conway and Adam O'Sullivan.

A special mention to Crotta's Cillian Mullins who played for Abbeydorney after one of their players was not able to line out in the second half of the game. Cillian played very well. Thanks to Abbeydorney for travelling to Dromakee and we will now play them in few weeks time in Abbeydorney.
Training for under 10's and 8's takes place each Wednesday evening at 6.45pm. We would like to see more of our under 10 players report for training as their is an under 10 blitz on Saturday next. For details contact one of the coaches.

NIGHT AT THE DOGS
The O’ Neills Crotta Hurling Club are holding a fund raising night at the dogs on this Saturday July 22nd in Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee. The First race will commence at 7.45p.m. Proceeds of the night will be used to erect a hurling wall on the Club’s grounds at Dromakee. A hurling wall is an important aid towards developing the hurling skills of young girls and boys. CEMETERY MASS
A large crowd attended the Annual Mass in St. Mary Cemetery, Kilflynn on Tuesday evening, 11th July in glorious sunshine. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Jack Fitzgerald and assisted by Br. Michael Neenan.

KILFLYNN VINTAGE CLUB
The Kilflynn Vintage Club would like to thank all the Vintage Tractors and their supporters for rising €3,410 for The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland (North Kerry branch). All most thirty vintage Tractors participate in the 2nd Annual Vintage Tractor Run on a very wet and windy Sunday, 18th June, The Tractor run covered a 20 mile run, commence and finished in Kilflynn Village, There enjoyed a well earned barbeque in Parker’s Pub afterwards. Vintage enthusiasts also had a treat as there was also a Vintage Stationary Display in the village on the day. The cheque of €3,410 was presented by the Kilflynn Vintage Club to Richard Pierce, Denis Switzer and Kathleen Heirley on behalf of The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland (North Kerry branch) on Friday night 14th July in Kilflynn Village.

MUSICAL SHOW
Sarah Morris, daughter of Mary and Phil Morris, The village, Kilflynn is a member of the cast in The Popular and Successful Musical Show Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor and Dreamcoat performing now at INEC Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney from Tuesday 4th until Saturday 15th July. Box office 064 71555. Sarah is a member of The Kerry School of Music, Tralee, the School and it’s pupils will feature in R.T.E’S Popular Programme Nationwide on R.T.E 1 on This Friday night 14th July. Tune In.

OBITUARY
The death of Michael Mickie O’Brien, Clounafineela, Kilflynn at the marvellous old age of 95 occurred on Friday 16th June, surrounded by his loving Family at Kerry General Hospital. Mikie was education at Old Cappa School , He worked on the family farm from a young age and continue to help his brother John throughout his life. He had a great passion for woodwork and as a young fellow spent time training under Mickeen O’Grady. Being a quick learner he was soon able to work on his own. In his day he could build a house from start to finish - making doors, windows and furniture- all with hand tools. He helped in building a number of houses locally. With a number of local men he went repairing cottages for the Council. During the Second World War, Mickie worked in King’s bog with men from all parts of Kerry. They supplied turf to many places, due to the shortage of oil and coal in the country. He later worked for many years in the block yard at Ballymullen in Tralee. He loved to reminisce and talk about the many characters he met during his working like, Mickie also loved the old game of cards. His remains were removed on Sunday June 18th from Mc Elligott’s Funeral Home, Tralee to St. Mary’s Church, Kilflynn where they were received by Fr. Jack Fitzgerald. P.P Burial took place in St. Mary’s Cemetery on Monday 19th June after requiem mass celebrated by Fr. Jack Fitzgerald and Fr. Maurice Brick. A lone piper led the funeral procession and Mickie’s friends provided a guard of honour, and his remains were shouldered by his grandsons, sons-in-law and his two sons Maurice and Michael the half mile journey to St. Mary’s cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside his wife Mary. Leading the cortege was a spirited one hundred and four, Republican veteran Dan Keating, Castlemaine a long time friend of Mickie‘s. Liam Cotter gave the oration at the grave side. Mickie’s Funeral on both days was huge and representative of the esteem in which he and his family are held in the community and beyond Sincere sympathy is extended to his daughters Bridget, Betty, Sarah, Mary and Ann, His Sons Maurice and Michael, his sister Noreen, Brother John, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. May he rest in peace.

DEATH IN THE U.K
The Community was saddened to learn of the death in Coventry, England of Michael Neenan, formerly of Crotta, Kilflynn. A member of a very well known and highly respected family. Michael emigrated to England over 50 years ago and done very well for himself at the other side of the Irish Sea. Despite being out of his native parish for so long Michael enjoyed keeping closely in touch with happenings at home and enjoyed coming back home from time to time. Interment took place on Wednesday 21st June in Coventry, England. Sincere Sympathy of the Community is extended to his Sons Michael and Paul, Grand Children, Great Grand Children, His Brothers John and Brendan, His Sister Bridget, Nephews, Nieces, Relatives and Friends. May he rest in peace.

Parker’s Bar, Kilflynn was the venue for The Crotta hurling club lotto draw on Monday night 10th July. The Four numbers drawn out of the drum by the Independent observer Martin Power, Kilflynn were: 13, 15, 21 & 26. There were no winners of the €2,600 Jackpot. SILVER JUBILEE
St Mary’s Church, Kilflynn, was packed to capacity on Friday 16th June when people from the parish and beyond attended a special mass to celebrate the silver jubilee of Fr O’Donnell’s ordination to the priesthood. Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Pat O’Donnell, Fr. Jack Fitzgerald and Fr. John Lawlor Fr Pat O’Donnell was educated in Flemby National, C.B.S, Tralee (The Green), St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and was Ordained in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney on 7th June 1981 He was C.C in Killarney also in 1981. Fr Pat became Spiritual Director of St. Brendan’s College, Killarney In 1987. Chaplaincy course Mater Dei, Dublin in 1990 and in 1991 he became chaplain in Tarbert Comprehensive School before he move to his currant residence in Kilflynn in 1998 as Chaplain of the Institute of Technology, Tralee and Priest-in residence, Kilflynn. Fr. O’Donnell special thanks to the choir who performed excellent on the night, the organising committee and to all who took part, helped or attended the celebration making it a memorable occasion for him. Afterwards, the many friends and family of Fr. Pat celebrated the occasion with refreshments and music in Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee. A number of presentations were made to Fr. O’ Donnell who in turn thanked everyone for their generosity. A very enjoyable night was had by all. Fr. O’Donnell’s father, brother and family all attended the celebrations. The parish congratulates Fr. O’Donnell on this special occasion and wishes him a long life in his sacred ministry.

CHRISTENED
Welcomed into the Christen Community in St. Mary’s Church, Kilflynn on Saturday 8th July by Fr. Jack Fitzgerald p.p, was baby Reagan Guerin, daughter of Threasa and Anthony Guerin, Rae, Kilflynn.

Abbeydorney Golf Society held their Captain's Mike Fuller's Prize day at Castleisland Golf Club last Saturday. The weather conditions were good and the course was in excellent condition which was reflected in the scoring. 40 golfers participated. The outing was sponsored by Mike & Geraldine Parker to whom the society are most grateful. The presentation of prizes was held in Parker's bar where the merriment and dancing went on until the late hours. CONGRATULATIONS to Siobhán O‘Mahony, daughter of Mary and Tom O’ Mahony, Leam, Kilflynn and Sean Hogan, son of Maureen and John Hogan, Gortnaminch, Listowel, who were united in holy matrimony in Church of the Immaculate Conception, Tralee, on Friday, 30th June. The ceremony was performed by Fr. Michael Moynihan. The reception was held at The Castleross Hotel, Killarney Also many congratulations to Rosemary Gleasure, daughter of Lorna and the late Adam Gleasure, Tullig, Kilflynn and Richard Towl, New Zealand, who celebrated their marriage in The Church, Ballyseedy, on Friday 7th July. The reception was held in Ballyseedy Castle, Tralee. We wish both happy couples long and happy lives together.

WORLD CUP
Congratulations to Michael Barry, Crotta and Denis Lynch, Kilflynn who won the World Cup Soccer Draws in Parker’s Pub, when Italy won on penalties by defeating France on Sunday.

The Crotta club was represented by Denis Mahony at wing forward on the Kerry Masters Hurling team that were beat by Dublin on the score of 2-10 to 0-12 at The Ragg Tipperary on Saturday 1st July. RING OF KERRY CYCLE
Congratulations to all the locals who took part in the Annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle of 112 miles which took place last Saturday. Weather conditions were pretty good and an enjoyable day was had by all with a tremendous sense of achievement in having completed the 112 miles. Those that took part were Graham Harris, Michael Barry, Valerie Lynch, Emily Lynch, Helen Kelly-Fuller, Lucy O'Flaherty, Maura Barry, Sabina O'Connell, Karina Lynn, Norma O'Connor, Austin Brosnan, Bobs Barry, Kathleen Lynch, Dan McCarthy, John Lynch, James Lynch, Sarah O'Connell, Derek Bones, P J Barry, Tom McElligott, and Marek Ustrzycki. They were ably assisted by Pat Lynch on service cum refreshments. They are still collecting funds for Enable Ireland so we would ask you to contribute generously, to any of the cyclists after their tremendous efforts, or to the writer of these notes who will pass on same.

The winners received a leg of lamb each. The weekly Darts Doubles Tournament will continue on Saturday night. Abbeydorney Golf Society had a great win in the Inter-Society Match play competition for all societies in Kerry with a 3-2 victory over Brosna golf Society who were beaten finalists last year. The last match was decided on the 19th hole with Pat Ruane getting a winning birdie. The Team was as follows: Dan O'Connor, James McGrath, Michael Barry, John Joe Fealy, Dan Brassil, Tom McNeice and Pat Ruane. They have now qualified for the last eight and we wish them the best of luck in the next round. SICK & RETIRED PRIESTS
The annual collection for the sick and retired priests of the diocese of Kerry, will be taken up on the week-end of Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th July. This fund provides for the maintenance of priests of the diocese who are now retired after many years of ministry or who become ill during their ministry.
