ABBEYDORNEY/KILFLYNN COMMUNITY GAMES
What a very successful weekend we had at our county athletic finals held at An Riocht track in Castleisland on Saturday and Sunday 17th and 18th of June. We had a large number of athletes representing the area and each and every one of them were a credit to their parish and to their parents. Despite tough competition and inclement weather conditions on Saturday, quite a number of athletes made it through their heats and quarter finals to qualify for the semi-finals on Sunday morning as did our u10 mixed relay. It was with great hope we headed to Riocht on Sunday and we were not disappointed. First on the track was Jack Hannon competing in the u10 hurdles semi final and he succeeded in becoming our first finalist of the day. However, more were to follow. Out on the track next were our u10 relay (Jack Hannon, Jedd Maunsell, Rebecca Falvey, Shaunagh Brosnan) and they ran a brilliant race to qualify comfortably for the final. In the sprint semi-finals we had Jason Brosnan (u8) 80m, Sean McElligott (u8) 80m, Shaunagh Brosnan (u10) 100m, and Aishling Guerin (u14) 100m. Even though they all ran really well they narrowly missed out on getting into their respective finals. However, I'm certain that we have not seen the last of them as they are very promising athletes. Finally, Rebecca Falvey and Jedd Maunsell were called onto the track for their 200m semi-finals with both qualifying for the finals in first and fourth place respectively.
The first final on track was the 600m final where we were represented by Tadgh McKenna who ran really well but the opposition proved to be too strong on the day. His sister Muireann ran in the 1500m final but on this occasion wasn't among the medallists.
Jack Hannon was next on the track in the u10 hurdles final and with bated breath we watched him as he jumped each one, hoping that he wouldn't fall or hit a hurdle. Again, he was awarded with a cert for his endeavours with all the top placing being very close at the finish.
Next up were the 200m finals. Jedd ran a powerful race and won a cert for his efforts in what was an extremely strong field of athletes. Rebecca, who had won all her races, was our final athlete of the day. From the gun she took off like a bullet and never relinquished the lead until she crossed the finishing line in the gold medal position . She is now heading for the National finals in Athlone in August. There was great excitement and delight among all her supporters as she headed back to the viewing area.
Last but definitely not least were our u10 relay. They ran brilliantly to finish in third place narrowly missing out on silver medals, but it was a fabulous performance considering that 3 members of the team had ran finals shortly before that and they were tired and leg-weary. Well done to all of you.
We would like to thank all the children who competed over the weekend and we hope you all left Riocht with great memories and new friends. Our thanks also to the parents who were so supportive and helpful over the weekend. we couldn't manage without you. As we come to the end of this year's events we look forward to next year with great hope and expectation and we wish Rebecca the best of luck in Athlone.
LONG PUCK; Also heading for Athlone for the 2nd year in a row is Oisin Maunsell who won the county final of the long puck which was held in Abbeydorney on Tues. 18th June. In what was a very strong field of 22 competitors Oisin pucked extremely well and was in medal contention from the very start. Once the pucks were measured it was confirmed that he was our gold medal winner. We wish him all the best in Athlone.
Oisin will be joined by Rachel McCarthy who won silver in the girls competition but due to the fact that the winner, Nessa McGarty, cannot compete in Athlone, Rachel becomes our very worthy representative and I know she will do us all proud. Congratulations to both Rachel and Oisin.
