CROTTA TRIP TO FEILE
All Crotta Players, Mentors and Supporters who travelled loved every minute of the experience at Feile na Gael 2014 and even though the travelling was very tiring it was brilliant from start to finish. The Panel of Players that represented the Club were hero's one and all. To witness these Lads giving everything for the Club made us feel very proud of them. All Parents deserve great credit on the way these lads have been brought up. All host families at St Feckins GAA Club in Termonfeckin, County Louth were full of praise for the young lads who stayed at each and every house. We did not have an ounce of bother for the whole weekend which is great to be able to say. We arrived in Kilflynn on Sunday evening 22nd June at about 8.30pm to a great welcome by a large crowd.
A trip to Feile is a big under taking and would not happen without the help of so many people. We would like to thank all who sponsored the Club. A list of Companies will appear in the next notes. We would like to thanks all Players Families, extended Families, Neighbours and friends who sponsored their Gear. Thanks to Mary McKenna who looked after the medical needs of the Panel. Thanks to our PRO Mike Parker who kept everyone at home updated on how games were going by social media. Finally the Club would like to thank Shane Herbert, Secretary Crotta Coiste na nOg who arranged the whole weekend and had everything in order from the time we left to our return on Sunday evening. FEILE NA GAEL 2014
On Friday June 20th at 7.30am Crotta U14 Players, Mentors, Club Officers, Parents, and Supporters left Kilflynn Village for Termonfeckin, Co Louth to compete in Feile na Gael 2014. A week previously Crotta had won the County League Division 1 Title so all travelling were in great spirits and looking forward to competing in the Competition. It was the second year in a row that Crotta had qualified for National Feile which is a great achievement considering that the Club never competed in the Competition previous to that. It was a journey into the unknown and the fact that 11 of the starting 15 and 16 of the panel of 21 are all eligible for next years County Feile made Crotta one of the youngest teams to take part. We had a break for breakfast in Nenagh and then we all travelled the second part of the journey to Termonfeckin. St Feckins GAA Club in County Louth were our host club and they way we were treated was top class. They did so much for us that no amount of words could Thank them. They looked after Players , Mentors and Supporters so well and all were made to feel so welcome.
Our first game was at 2pm against St Feckins and after a sluggish first half, which was to be expected after a 4 hour bus journey, the Lads settled into the game and won it at the death with a great point from play by Eamon Rohan. Conditions were very hot and the game was a very tight match but against a much physically stronger St Feckins team Crotta's hurling skill came to the fore. After the game all the travelling party were fed and then we boarded the bus to Armagh. The journey was about 80mins and we were welcomed by the local stewards and given our slot in the Parade which was number 6. The team mingled with other teams while waiting for the parade to start. Eventually proceedings got underway and as we entered the stadium and the name Crotta O'Neills was announced,we got a great welcoming round of applause from the large attendance and it was great to see our own supporters among the crowd. This part of the weekend will never be forgotten by all who witnessed it. Darragh O'Donoghue(Captain) accepted the Ulster Feile 2014 pendant on behalf of the Crotta team. After the parade all headed back to the host families in Termonfeckin.
An early night was had by all as we had two games on Saturday morning. First up was East Cavan Gaels who again were a stonger team physically. Crotta settled early and had scored 2-04 before East Cavan Gaels registered their first score. A comfortable win in the end but at a cost as a few players picked up injuries. A very much changed 15 took the field for the final Group game against Burren Rangers from Carlow. Crotta needed a win to top the Group and although conceding a goal before half time left them one point in arrears , they put in a great second half to run out winners. Again playing three tough games in such a short space of time resulted in more injuries but thanks to Mary McKenna all were assessed, treated and in time recovered. James Sheehan was ruled out of the quarter final clash though.
After a short while we again boarded the bus and headed for Monaghan Harps GAA where our quarter final against Cootehill of Cavan would take place. This game was a tough bruising encounter but we eventually came out on top.
A semi final place now beckoned for a extremely tired team and again we found ourselves with an early start from Louth where we said our good byes to our hosts. 9am we boarded the bus and our destination was two hours away in Tyrone. Our opponents were Clan na Gael from County Meath. From the outset we looked leggy and tired and try as they might the lads could not turn around a four point half time deficit. This game was where Feile 2014 ended for Crotta.
All that travelled loved every minute of the experience and eventhough the travelling was very tiring it was brilliant from start to finish. The Panel of Players that represented the Club were hero's one and all. To witness these Lads giving everything for the Club made us feel very proud of them. All Parents deserve great credit on the way these lads have been brought up. All host families were full of praise for the young lads who stayed at each and every house. We did not have an ounce of bother for the whole weekend which is great to be able to say. We arrived in Kilflynn on Sunday evening at about 8.30pm to a great welcome by a large crowd.
A trip to Feile is a big undertaking and would not happen without the help of so many people. We would like to thank all who sponsored the Club. A list of Companies will appear in the next notes. We would like to thanks all Players Families, extended Families, Neighbours and friends who sponsored their Gear. Thanks to Mary McKenna who looked after the medical needs of the Panel. To Sean O'Donoghue and Tomas O'Connor who prepared the team before games and did warm down routines after. Thanks to Gavin Parker for all his help and to Jack O'Donoghue our mascot. Thanks to Bill Mangan our Coach driver who got us to and from our different venues. Thanks to all our Supporters who gave us tremendous support at each match. Thanks especially to all Parents for their commitment and dedication throughout the year. The Club would like to thank Mentors Aiden Sheehan, Tom O'Donoghue, Shane Herbert and Paul O'Donoghue for all the work they have done during the year. Thanks also to JP McElligott, Tim O'Rourke and Mike McKenna who helped out. Thanks to our Chairman Sonny Egan for his generous sponsorship and again he stole the show with his entertaining of the local people. Sonny also presented St Feckins with a Plaque to mark our stay with them and he received a presentation from their Club in return. A lot of unseen work went in to the arranging of our participation at the occasion and we are grateful to Shane. Thanks to the North Kerry Board and the County Board for their sponsorship. Finally to our Panel of Players who exceeded our greatest expectations by reaching the semi-final of Feile 2014, I would like to say thanks for all your efforts since January 2014. I have no doubt that some of you will represent the Club at Senior level in years to come. Some of you will also wear the County Colours and already Darragh O'Donoghue, Pairic Shanahan and Eamon Rohan have been selected on the Kerry U14 Panel.
The following are the Panel who reached the Feile 2014 semi final: Cillian Trant Micheal Kennedy Ryan McElligott Darragh Murnane Jack Kevin McKenna Eamonn Rohan Declan O'Donoghue Daniel O'Rourke Pairic Shanahan Darragh O'Donoghue(Capt) Aodhan McKenna Denis Quille Sean Murnane James Sheeehan Tomas Dillon Tadhg McKenna Keith O'Connor Aodhan Behan Daniel Hunt David O'Connell Timmy Dillon.

THE LATE BILLY STACK
Another great from Crotta’s golden era was laid to rest last May. Yes Billy stack succumbed to the march of time, leaving a deep void in the business and sporting community of Lixnaw. Born in the heart of Crotta 85 years ago Billy remained a lifetime lover and supporter of the green & red and in recent years was immensely proud to see his grandson Bill Keane playing in those colours.
Billy was the last of the Stack brothers, a family that gave long and devoted service to the Crotta club as players, sponsors and field providers. Yes Stack’s field was the mecca for Crotta hurlers throughout much of the forties and fifties, where the spirit, courage and never say die attitude that epitomised Crotta teams, was instilled in so many young players.
Billy had the distinction of playing in 5 County finals between 1947 & 1957 and winning 3 of those along with his brother Matt. 1947 proved to be a special year for Billy as he won minor and senior championship medals that year when playing at midfield. A most versatile and talented hurler, he was equally at home in the forwards, midfield or defence. The 1957 County final which an ageing Crotta team lost to Ballyduff, proved to be his swansong with Billy finishing the game at full back.
After his retirement from the game, Billy gave many years driving the Kerry hurlers and also served as a Kerry selector before turning his attention to the greyhounds. The highlight of this chapter in his life was the winning of the Hanafin Cup at the Tralee track with Sooti Pole.
A true gentleman on and off the field, he also possessed that steely determination which stood him in good stead as a hurler and a businessman. Billy possessed a charming personality, full of humour and a rare ability to recall events and characters he encountered along the road of life.
Billy was honoured by the Crotta club with the Hall of Fame award in 2005. Incidentally this award was initiated and sponsored by his son Hugh since 1986. To his wife Maureen, his sons Hugh and Seamus, daughters Marie and Katie, grandchildren and extended family and friends we offer our deepest sympathy. May he rest in peace.
