CROTTA WIN COUNTY MINOR HURLING LEAGUE DIV 1 TITLE
Crotta 3-18 Lixnaw 2-16
The Crotta Minor Team made history on Monday evening July 18th when they won the County League Division 1 Final for the very first time in the history of the Club. Their opponents were Lixnaw and credit goes to both teams for providing a tremendous match on a beautiful evening for hurling. The game was played in Abbeydorney (arguably one of the best surfaces for hurling in the Country) before a large crowd.
Crotta started the brighter and Barry Mahony was proving to be a real handful for the Lixnaw defence. Barry Mahony opened the scoring with three pointed frees before Lixnaw’s chief scorer Shane Conway opened their account from a free. These two excellent hurlers swapped scores on a number of other ocassions and after 18mins the score was Crotta 0-07 Lixnaw 0-04. Sean O’Donoghue who was mopping up a lot of ball around the middle then sent a long delivery towards the Lixnaw goal. This was well caught by Dylan McElligott who turned and crashed the ball to the Lixnaw net. Shortly after though a well taken goal by Thomas Molyneaux brought the deficit again to three points. Darragh Kennelly was leading a very good defensive unit at this stage and his reading of the play was a feature of the game. Darragh Behan switched to full back and this helped to limit the Lixnaw inside line to very few chances. Eamonn Shanahan and Jeaic Mckenna were also getting the better of their direct opponents and Tomas O’Connor was covering a lot of ground around the middle. John Quilter who played really well over the hour , won possession from an Adam O’Sullivan puck out and fired it over the bar. Donal Hunt who was lively throughout also put his name on the score sheet from a tight angle. Sean O’Donoghue also split the posts with a point and in a short space of time Lixnaw’s goal was cancelled out and Crotta retained their six point lead which proved crucial. Barry Mahony and Shane Conway converted any free they were given and this left the half time score: Crotta 1-14 Lixnaw 1-08. The second half was really competitive and was score for score with both Barry Mahony and Shane Conway trading points from frees and play.
When Lixnaw did reduce the deficit to four points on two occasions they were rocked by two goals from corner forwards Donal Hunt and Darragh O’Donoghue. These goals helped Crotta have the cushion of 7 point leads on two different occasions near the end of the contest. Lixnaw did manage to raise a second green flag three minutes from time but Crotta never looked in danger after that and Referee Mike Joy blew the full time whistle to scenes of jubilation. Crotta: Adam O’Sullivan Eamon Shanahan Thomas Quinlan Darragh Kennelly Paudie Dillon Darragh Behan Jeaic McKenna Tomas O’Connor(Capt) Sean O’Donoghue(0-01) Brandon Conway Barry Mahony (0-15,0-08f)John Quilter(0-01) Darragh O’Donoghue(1-00) Dylan McElligott(1-00) Donal Hunt(1-01). Subs Micheal Kennedy for Brandon Conway, Brian O’Connell for Paudie Dillon, Dominic Nolan for Donal Hunt, Darragh Stack for Darragh O’Donoghue, James Sheeehan, Ryan McElligott, Denis Quille James Sheehan.
Tomas O’Connor was presented with the County League Div 1 Trophy by Ger McCarthy, Hurling Officer of the County. Ger also presented Barry Mahony with the Man of the Match award which was thoroughly deserved.
Brendan Mahony is the Manager of the Minor team and his backroom team are Micheal Lynch, John Edwards, Paul O’Donoghue and Shane Nolan. Sean Weir and Raymond Nolan also assisted during Final.

CROTTA LEISURE CYCLISTS
Congratulations to the 40 plus members of our local cycling who took part in the Annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle of 112 miles recently. Despite a very wet start from Killarney to Killorglin, weather conditions were pretty good though throughout with only the occasional shower to contend with. A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all with a tremendous sense of achievement in having completed the 112 miles especially for the members who were doing it the first time. It is estimated that up to 11,000 cyclists took part in total which makes it the biggest charity cycle in the country. It is a wonderfully organised and stewarded event with over 1,100 volunteers on duty during the day.
The group would like to express their thanks to Mike and Geraldine Parker for hosting their post cycle BBQ and celebration which went on to the early hours.

CROTTA'S U-14 FÉILE JOURNEY
Crotta's Feile adventure began on Saturday 23rd April in Ballyduff with the group stage. First up was a narrow win v Tralee Parnells followed by another narrow win v Kilmoyley, two games that could have gone either way but Crotta's grit and determination saw them through in the end, the 3rd and final game on the day was v Lixnaw who had also won their two games, this ended in defeat for Crotta but the two teams had already booked their place in the final on May 2nd.
All roads led to Lerrig, Kilmoyley for the Final on May 2nd against a much fancied Lixnaw side, but the Crotta boys were not to be outdone on the day with a magnificent performance of determination and skill coming out on top with a 6pt to 3pt victory over our local rivals and a place in the National Feile Finals in Tipperary/Waterford.
Tom Keane (Kerry Coiste na nÓg Chairperson), presented the County Board Féile b Sheild to Crotta victories Crotta captain Tadhg McKenna after the game
We headed to our host club Ballingarry in Tipperary on Friday 17th June, where we were in Division 5 with some very strong teams. Our first game on the Friday evening was v Mullinahone where the display of hurling by both teams was a joy to behold, Crotta lost two key players to injury before the game even started and another player early in the game so it was an unbelievable display of courage and skill to see them leading all the way through, only being denied victory by a last minute goal that saw the game end in a draw on the score line 2-03 to 2-03.
Mullinahone is the Club of former Tipperary Hurler Eoin Kelly who stood in for a photo with the Crotta boys.
Next up was Easkey/St. Farnans from Sligo who were physically much stronger but our lads again led the whole game and only a last minute penalty denied us a victory this time losing by the narrowest of margins on the scoreline 4-05 to 4-04.
The following day after a much needed rest we took on our host club Ballingarry and again after another brilliant performance they were too strong for us in the end beating us on a scoreline of 2-04 to 0-4. Next up was a 45 min road trip to play Buncrana from Donegal in Clonoulty, where two goals conceded in quick concession just before halftime was the difference in the end Crotta losing on a scoreline of 2-06 to 1-03.
It must be said the players were just magnificent all weekend with the hurling they played and the determination they showed in every game earning the respect they deserved in the home of hurling. All the players played their parts and every player that travelled got plenty of game time.
A huge Thank You to our host club Ballingarry for the hospitality all weekend, they went above and beyond and could not have been more welcoming. The host families also for looking after the players all weekend. Hopefully they will travel down to us in the not too distant future where we will return the compliment.
Also a huge Thank You to the parents for all the fundraising leading up to and after the Feile, also your co- operation and patience with us the mentors.
And last not but not least the players, what can we say to every one of you.
Ye were magnificent all weekend, the hurling you played, the heart and determination also, ye were excellent ambassadors for the club in every way, you're parents should be very proud of you.
The Crotta U-14 Hurling Panel were
