JUNE 2010

29th June 2010

COMMUNITY GAMES
County athletic finals were held at The Riocht track, Castleisland last weekend and they proved tO'be very successful for Abeydorney/Kilflynn. The sun definitely shone on all our competitors whO'were a credit tO'themselves, their families and their area. It began early on Saturday morning when Clodagh Bolger and Aideen Spillane represented the area in the opening parade. Then competitions began in earnest with Caoimhe Spillane and Doireann Thomas running in the u-10 200m, heats. Even though they didnt qualify for the quarter-finals, they ran well and are eligable for this event again next year. Next on rack we had Breada Walsh, Ava Peevers and Rebecca Falvey in the u-8 60m with all three of them qualifying comfortably for the quarter-finals. Ava and Rebecca then went on tO'qualify for the semi-finals Sunday morning. Oisan Maunsell and Jedd Maunsell ere our next competitors in the u-8 80m and with the wind at their backs sailed through their heats and quarter-finals tO'alsO'qualify for semi-finals on Sunday. Katie Falvey, Rachel McCarthy and Clodagh Bolger competed in the u-12 100m, with Rachel
reaching the quarter-finals and Katie qualifying comfortably for the semi-finals on Sunday. Tadgh McKenna competed in the u-10 60 m hurdles and even though he jumped well, he didn't qualify for the next round. However, his brother Jack and his sister Muireann had nO'problems qualifying for the finals of their respective competitions the 600m and the 800m. Sunday morning dawned bright and sunny and we headed for An Riocht once again. Ava, Rebecca, Jedd and Oisan winning their semi-finals. Jedd and Rebecca both ran really well and should not be toO'disappointed as they are under-age again next year. Both Ava and Oisan ran brilliantly in their finals and well deserved their silver and bronze medals. The future looks very bright for Abbeydorney/Kilflynn community games with this quality of young runners. Alban Stack and Olivia Carmody were both involved in the ball-throw competition while our athletes were winning medals on the track. They both threw very well but unfortunately were not in the medals. Jack McKenna competed in the 600m final and he ran a very good race but didn't make it intO'the medal position. Finally up stepped Muireann McKenna in the u-14 800m and she put the icing on the cake for us by winning a very competitive, tactical race in great style. This was a huge achievement as Muireann is under age again next year. She now heads for Athlone in August tO'represent us at the national finals. Congratulations once again tO'all our competitors especially our medal winners - Oisín Maunsell (Bronze), Ava Peevers (Silver) and Muireann McKenna (Gold). Our thanks tO'all the parents whO'were sO'helpful and supportive during the weekend and tO'Darragh O''Connell whO'trained all the young athletes during the past month. It was a very enjoyable and successful weekend for all concerned.

Our U11 team take pride of place this week due tO'their brilliant win in the North Kerry U11 A Championship. The final was played at a sun drenched Lixnaw last Wednesday evening. The pitch was in perfect condition thanks tO'Butch Fealy, grounds man on the FAS/Lixabbey Project. Causeway won the toss and elected tO'play with the lively breeze in their favour. Crotta had the best of the opening exchanges and were camped in the opposition half for the first 8 mins. This pressure had tO'tell and when Adam O''Sullivan superbly controlled a long delivery out of the Crotta defence, turned inside his marker, and drilled the ball tO'the Causeway net Crotta were up and running. Causeway slowly got their game together and a pointed Evan Murphy free opened their account. Soon after Dan Goggin (Causeway) pointed from play after opening up the Crotta rearguard. A patch of play that yielded nO'scores followed, and the intensity and skill of both sets of players kept the large crowd entertained. Barry Mahony at midfield was hurling up a storm and he was ably assisted by both wingbacks Dominic Nolan and Pauiric Shanahan. John Quilter was getting through an amount of work in the corner and was clearing his lines time and again. Sean Galvin and Donal Hunt were extremely lively in the middle third of the field. Mahony effected a great clearance again from midfield and when the ball landed near the Causeway goal, Adam O''Sullivan was again on hand tO'finish neatly. Causeway's response was immediate and a sideline ball by Gary Carey (Causeway) travelled all the way tO'the net with goalie Darragh O''Donoghue(Crotta) unsighted. Crotta 2-00 Causeway 1-02. Barry Mahony and Adam O''Sullivan both pointed frees (following fouls on the lively Sean Murnane) and these were sandwiched by an Evan Murphy (Causeway) free. Half time Crotta 2-02 Causeway1-03.

North Kerry Hurling Coiste na nog Chairman Joe Walsh presents The Steve Grady Memorial Trophy tO'victorious Crotta Captain, Barry Mahony following Crotta's win over Causeway in North Kerry U-11 Final in Lixnaw on Wednesday evening 23rd June. PhotO': Mike Parker

The second half was dominated by Crotta whO'hurled as if their lives depended on it. All 15 players whO'were on the field at one time or another hurled really well. Barry Mahony whO'was outstanding throughout, pointed a free, a sixty five and scored 1-01 from play in the second half. Causeway were held at bay in this half thanks tO'a solid display by six backs and when Dan Goggin breached the defence once he was foiled by a brilliant save by Crotta keeper Darragh O''Donoghue. Captain Barry Mahony accepted the Sean Grady trophy amid great scenes of joy. As mentioned Barry Mahony was man of the match and he was closely followed by Dominic Nolan whO'had his best match in the green and red jersey. Darragh O''Donoghue in goals and all backs played their part. Sean Galvin, Donal Hunt impressed in the middle of the field. Adam O''Sullivan showed what a great finisher he is and he was ably assisted by Sean and Aaron Murnane. Darragh Behan , Jeaic McKenna and Darragh Murnane (when introduced) did what was asked of them. Behan being particularly effective in doing the hard grafting when the opposition had the ball. Panel was as follows: Darragh O''Donoghue Eamonn Rohan Brian O''Connell John Quilter Pauiric Shanahan Jeaic McKenna Dominic Nolan Barry Mahony(1-04) Sean Galvin Aaron Murnane Darragh Behan Donal Hunt Adam O''Sullivan(2-01) Padraig Hunt Sean Murnane Michael Carmody Bobby Gale Ciaran Healy Cian Keenan Aodhan McKenna Darragh Murnane James Sheehan Daniel O''Rourke David Ryan. A great victory by all concerned and well done tO'mentors Aidan, Paddy, Padraig, Jerome, Plunkett and Paul. Causeway were sO'gracious in defeat and showed how tO'accept defeat well. Well done tO'Barry Walsh, Stephen Goggin, Fitzpatrick and Joseph Lyons. Well done tO'referee Tony McCarthy whO'refereed the game the way it should be, leaving the play flow at all times. Thanks tO'the Lixnaw club for having the pitch and grounds available.

CROTTA COISTE NA NOG news by Paul O''Donoghue:
We have had a very busy fortnight on the underage hurling front. The U12 team contested their second U12 final in twO'years and again lady luck conspired against them. Lixnaw were our opponents and tO'be honest they seemed tO'want it more. Our lads did not perform tO'their full potential on the night and our forwards did not seem tO'click. Our captain Brandon Conway had a tremendous match in goals and Darragh Kennelly at full back was outstanding. Colin Browne and Barry Mahony alsO'had their moments. Cathal Kennelly was the pick of a sluggish forward line. All the lads went out tO'dO'their best and they are a credit tO'their parents and the club. They are a joy tO'train and sO'well behaved. These lads will win more than they lose and they will have their day. A big thank you tO'Joan Herbert (Herbert's Bar) whO'once again fed the masses that returned tO'Kilflynn. Players, mentors and supporters all had their fill of Joan's cooking and everyone remarked on the amount of food served up. Joan sponsored the food and refreshments again having previously done sO'after we played Dr Crokes. Thanks alsO'tO'Brendan Mahony (Brendan Mahony butchers) whO'sponsored the energy drinks for U12 and U11 teams in recent matches.

Last Thursday evening we met Ballyduff in the semi final and after a hard struggle, eventually we were victorious. Darragh O''Donoghue in goals John Quilter in the full back line played well. Darragh Behan and Pauric Shanahan got through an amount of work in the half back line. Donal Hunt (first half) Sean Galvin and Barry Mahony excelled throughout. The pick of the forwards were Aaron Murnane Sean Murnane and Adam O'Sullivan. Scorers Adam Sullivan 2-01 Barry Mahony 1-02 Aaron Murnane 1-01Sean Murnane 0-02 . Laurence Twomey with The Crotta Hall of Fame Award 2007

LAURENCE TWOMEY
A pall of gloom descended on Kilflynn Village and the parish on Sunday evening 11th April on the news of the sudden death of Laurence Twomey. Having spent almost every day of his 80 years in Kilflynn village, Laurence and the Twomey house could be described as the heart and soul of the community, here visitors were always assured of a kind word and a helping hand wherever needed.
A Deeply religious and charitable man, Laurence was gifted with a brilliant mind, a great sense of humour and a sharp wit. His ability tO'recall in detail events of recent and by gone days was in comparable.
He had a remarkable personality, was revered by all in the community where he was certainly unique.
Laurence interests named from farming, tO'G.A.A , tO'dogs, tO'politics, tO'local history and local genealogy
Laurence was one of the chief architects in setting up of the present the Crotta Hurling Club in 1962, having played for both Crotta and Kilflynn hurling teams previously . Though the 60s and 70s his contribution tO'the club has immense. He was the glue that bonded the different strands together.
Though he never accepted how little he was acknowledged by players as their trainer and natural leader during the early years . His motivational skills were superb due his perfect understanding of each individual. If reverse psychology was needed, he didn?t hesitate tO'use it .
Laurence played in three county finals 1957, 67 and in 1968 when he finally achieved his ambition of securing that county championship for the club . He alsO'served as club chairman, secretary and was president at the time of his death. He received the Crotta hall of fame award in 2007.
