THE LATE JOHN CASHELL
The people of Kilflynn and surroundings areas were very saddened to hear of the sudden death on Wednesday 23rd April of John Cashell, Gortclohy, Kilflynn. A Shy and modest Man, John came from a very large family.
John was a devoted husband and father and most obliging and friendly neighbour.
Being one of the older members of a large family, John was later a father figure to his younger siblings - always providing hospitality and words of wisdoms or comfort.
Blessed with skilful hands, he could adapt to building, mechanics, hurling, shooting, fishing or accordion playing with ease . A firm believer in the motto “If something is worth doing, it is worth doing correctly”
John attended Kilflynn National School which he represented at hurling and football, at an early age his talent was very obvious, being involved in some great clashes against Clandouglas National School - backed boned by the Landers brothers from Glenoe, Listowel- and Abbeydorney National School.

The late John Cashell (on the left), Gortclohy, Kilflynn at the Crotta Hurling Club Social in Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee on Saturday night 17th February 2007  also in the photo are former Crotta players Brendan Twomey,Laurence Twomey (Crotta Hurling Club Hall of Fame 2007 recipient) Tom Egan and Gerald Whyte.

It was as a hurler that John Cashell was best Known, a fine athlete - with exceptional skill levels and a superb striker off right and left, but he never realised his true potential.
We saw flashes of that brilliance throughout the 1957 Campaign when “skippered” Kilflynn to a Junior County Kerry hurling title . Again it was evident in 1970 when he outplayed the legendary Michael Hennessy on a Kilflynn/Abbeydorney combination. He produced that brilliance again in 1964 County Senior hurling league final against Lixnaw when he dominated the game until his late injury which cost Crotta the game.
John’s sporting interests were not confined to hurling, he could discuss with equal authority international Rugby or Soccer or Tennis Tournaments . In his younger days at a time when interest in Rugby and Soccer limited, John was one of the first to assemble in Condon’s Shop, Kilflynn after Sunday mass to read about and discuss the previous days results with colleagues Johnny Rohan, Jimmy King, Michael Hickey and Gerald Whyte.
John was also a keen fisherman and in his retirement, spent a lot of hours on the banks of the Feale especially around Finuge where he was generous in his advice to young fishermen. John was president of Killocrim/Finuge Fishing club.
To his wife Bess, Son Tommy and his Fiancee Deirdre, Daughter Martina and her Fiance David, his brothers and sisters, his relatives and large circle of friends we offer our Sincere Sympathy .
John may you rest in peace under the gentle sod of your native Kilflynn.

The parade led by a Colour Party and The Ballyseedy Martyrs' Band assembled at the bridge at 4 pm and made it's way to the Graveyard wherein the Volunteers are interred. The proceedings were chaired by Morgan O'Flaherty and he welcomed the attendance on a day when we remember local men who gave their lives in the cause of Irish Freedom. A minute's silence was observed to remember all those who paid the ultimate price in the struggle for national self-determination, justice and democracy. Wreaths were lain on behalf of the Republican Movement and Prisoners by Angelo Fusco and Karl Shanahan respectively. The oration was delivered by Deputy Martin Ferris who said that such an attendance was an indication of the esteem in which these and all other men and women who gave their lives for freedom are still held. He also paid tribute to all those who worked so hard to ensure that the flawed and undemocratic Lisbon Treaty was rejected and he called on the Dublin Government to go back to Brussels to secure a deal that would not only be in Ireland's interest but would also be in the best interest of all of the people of Europe.
