THE LATE JOHN O’CARROLL
Death is never easy to accept but when it comes prematurely, it is extra difficult to understand. Consequently it was with great sadness the sportspeople throughout Kerry heard of John O’ Carroll from Ballyduff on Friday 27th April.
Crotta Hurlers first encountered John O’ Carroll (and his brother Mike) when he burst onto the Ballyduff Senior hurling team in 1973.
John “Ban” with his long blonde hair and swashbuckling style-Reminiscent of Cork’s John Horgan- broke the hearts of many Crotta forwards over the next fifteen years. The youthful John who appeared indestructible on the field was fear, tough and uncompressing as a defender, but was gentle soul and wonderful character off the field.
A genuine passionate sportsman whose love for all sport continued right to the end.
For Crotta people John was special as he always shared their company after games. Definitely that unique bond shared between great rivals in the hurling fields of North Kerry strengthened over the decades. So it was only fitting that John wished to borne to his final resting place by former Crotta players.
John is probably now playing backs and forwards with another great warrior of that era- Todd Nolan, just like Setanta and Cuchulainn.
To his wife Una, Sons Stephen and Brian, daughters Niamh and Aoife, Brothers Mike, Patrick, and Anthony, Sisters Anne, relatives, friends and his teams mates to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
John may you rest in peace under the gentle sod of your native Ballyduff.

UNDER 9 HURLERS
Last Sunday in Dromakee Crotta U9 played Lixnaw in a thrilling game of hurling before a large attendance. The match was twelve a side. The team lined as follows:
Sean O Donoghue, Dominic Nolan, Brandon Conway, Thomas Quinlan, Barry Mahony, John Quilter, Jack Mckenna, Cathal Kennelly, Aoife Behan, Nathan Fahy, Adam O Sullivan, Dylan McElligott
Subs: Cillian Mullins, Jamie Mullins, Darragh O’Donoghue, Darragh Behan, Brian
O'Connell, Aodhan Mc Kenna.
Lixnaw won the toss and elected to play with the breeze to their backs. Crotta started the brighter and had the majority of possession without scoring. Lixnaw came into the game then but Crotta’s defensive unit remained intact. Crotta scored first through Dylan McElligott after great work by Aoife Behan and Cathal Kennelly. This was followed shortly after by another Crotta goal when a combination of Aoife Behan and Cathal Kennelly forced the sliotar over the Lixnaw goal line. Lixnaw then took control of the match and four unanswered points by Lixnaws Shane Conway whose long range striking was a feature throughout. At halftime the score was Crotta 2 goals, Lixnaw 0-04.
As in the first half Crotta gained control early and both Aoife Behan and Cathal Kennelly rattled the Lixnaw net. Lixnaw then scored a goal. A number of subs were introduced at this stage and Darragh O’Donoghue crossed from the right corner to the oncoming Cathal Kennelly who scored his second goal of the game. Lixnaw upped their performance and after sustained pressure they scored another goal. With time almost up it was fitting that Crotta’s Man of the Match Barry Mahony should have the final say when a long strike out of defence ended in the opponents net. Final score Crotta 6-00 Lixnaw 2-04.
Sean O’Donoghue in the goals had a quite day due to the five backs in front of him who proved difficult to breach. Dominic Nolan and Brandon Conway cleared their lines on numerous occasions. Outside of them the trio of John Quilter, Barry Mahony and Thomas Quinlan hurled superbly. Quinlan gave his best performance in the Crotta colours. Jack Mc Kenna was his usual self at midfield with every ounce of energy given to the cause.
In the half forward line Aoife and Cathal can feel well pleased after scoring two goals each but its their work rate especially Aoife’s which stands out. Nathan Fahy tried hard but on occasions he did not get the run of the ball. Their will be better days ahead. Inside Dylan Mc Elligott had the first score of the match and made a huge difference when moved to the centre. On another day Adam O’Sullivan could have had six points but his shots at goal narrowly missed each time. He still looks the most natural forward on the team. All subs were introduced and played their part. A special mention to Brian O’Connell and Aodhan McKenna who made their debuts.
We would like to thank Johnny Conway and the Lixnaw team for travelling to Dromakee to play us. We have been invited to a return match in Lixnaw in a couple of week’s time.
Also parents of both teams deserve a mention for turning up in large numbers to support and encourage the players. Long may this continue to keep the greatest game in the world very much alive. Thanks to Brendan Mahony who was the referee for the game.

CROTTA U-11 HURLERS
Our under 11 hurlers have played two games in the past couple of weeks.
On Tuesday 17th April, we travelled to Ballyduff to take on the home side. After conceding an early goal Crotta fought back to lead 2-1 to 1-0 after 10 minutes with Jordan Conway and Raymond Nolan on target. Tom McElligott pointed a free. Ballyduff finished the half stronger and back by a strong breeze lead by 5 goals and a point to two goals and a point.
Crotta with the wind at their backs were fast out of the blocks in the second half and scored straight away from the restart through Raymond Nolan. Jordan Conway added another goal soon afterwards and at this stage it was all Crotta. Try as they might Crotta could not take advantage of the possession they had. Ballyduff eventually got the upper hand as a young Crotta team faded. Final score Crotta 4 goals and one point Ballyduff 8 goals and one point.
It was a tremendous tussle and a very good game of hurling. It was a pity that both sets of players had to endure playing a match in long grass. Surely in a time when we are trying to promote hurling to our young children it would be appropriate to have them playing in the correct conditions.
Tom McElligott gave an excellent performance in the backs and the twin threat of Raymond Nolan and Jordan Conway showed flashes of brilliance. The team tried very hard and gave their all which is all that is asked of them.
The team was as follows:
Sean O'Donoghue, Darragh Ryan, Adrian Mahony, Barry Mahony, Tom McElligott, Brandon Conway, Patrick Fahy, Sean Gleasure, Thomas Quinlan, Kieran Flanaghan, Darragh Regan, Raymond Nolan, Jordan Conway.

Subs: Danny Browne, Jamie O’Sullivan, Bill Keane, Donnacha Brosnan, David Behan, Dillon McElligott, Mark Egan, Adam O'Sullivan, Jack McKenna, Dominic Nolan, Aoife Behan.
All Subs played in the game.
On Tuesday the 24th April we played Duagh at home. A much stronger Duagh team led at half time by 3 goals and three points to no score. Crotta had several chances to score but it was not their day. The match eventually finished Crotta 0-1point, Duagh 4 goals and three points. With every match this young team is learning and a feature of the match was the outstanding display of Barry Mahony at wing back.
Patrick Fahy also tried hard.
The team lined out as follows:
Brandon Conway, Adrian Mahony, Ciaran Flanaghan, Sean O'Donoghue, Tom McElligott, Barry Mahoney, Patrick Fahy, Donnacha Brosnan, Darragh Regan, Jamie O'Sullivan, Raymond Nolan, Sean Gleasure. Jordan Conway.
Subs: Cathal Kennelly, Aaron Murnane, David Ryan, Thomas Quinlan, Bill Keane, Dillon McElligott, Adam O'Sullivan, Dominic Nolan, Aoife Behan.
All subs played in the game.

FINUGE / ST.SENANS LADIES FOOTBALL
The U12 Team Played Ballyduff at Mountcoal last Monday evening , Despite a valiant effort Ballyduff proved just too strong on the night. Size and Strength again worked against our girls but to their credit they fought to the end.
The Panel for this game was: Siobhan O’Donnell (Capt),Kerry Moore Mc Kenna ,Emma Browne, Rebecca Sparks, Sarah Browne ,Caroline Buckley, Emma Thornton, Olivia Stack, ,Amy Kelly, Tara O‘ Regan, Claire Hunt, Hannah Roche, Rachel Horgan, ,Jacqueline Hogan, Megan, Weir, Sarah Kerins, Rebecca Horgan, Louise Horgan, Muireann Mc Kenna, and Catriona O’Halloran.
The under 14 team came oh so close to a well deserved win on Friday night but suffered heartbreak in the closing minutes against Glenflesk, this game was played in Lixnaw and marked the best performance so far, for this improving team. If the girls continue to show the skill and spirit displayed on Friday night, Success can’t be far off.
The panel on the night: Catherine O’ Rahilly (Capt), Sarah Browne, Siobhan O’Donnell, Kerry Moore Mc Kenna, Nicola O’Leary, Olivia Quilter, Brogan O’Grady, Caroline Buckley, Claire Hunt, Jacinta Mc Carthy, Maria O’Halloran, Megan Weir, Tara Buckley, Sarah Kerins, Hannah Roche, and Rebecca Horgan.

KILFLYNN SANTOS: 4, BALLYHAR B: 2

Kilflynn's Santos Goal Scorer Aiden Scanlan, will be happy with his side's victory over Ballyhar Dynamos on Sunday 29th April

Kilflynn Santos Senior team advanced to the next round of the Tommy Healy Cup after beating Ballyhar Dynamons B in extra time at Mounthawk Park, Tralee on Sunday 29th April. This game had to finish on the day as they drew 2 all the previous in Ballyhar.
Kilflynn Santos started brightly and created good scoring chances but failed to hit the target dueto poor finishing and the keeper saving one goal bound effort from Gary Hogan. On a rare attack Kilflynn failed to clear a ball out on the wing and the resulting shot took a wicked deflection and sailed into the top corner giving Kilflynn’ s keeper Alan Bonn no chance.
Kilflynn drew level within 10 minutes when Martin Daughton put in a great cross from the right which was headed home by Colm Mc Elligott, Kilflynn pushed for the lead but were caught again by another deflected shot which took to the net. Half time score 2-1 to Ballyhar Dynmons.
The second Half saw Kilflynn playing with the wind and despite dominating the play failed to create any clear chances, with time running out Aiden Scanlon came up from defence to latch on a cross from Luke Ward and finish to the net. Full time score 2-2.
Extra time saw the game becoming more open with players getting tired from a very hard pitch. Kilflynn took the lead from corner when Andrew Keane scored in the first half of extra time. The second half of extra time saw Ballyhar pressing for an equalizer and Kilflynn holding, within the last minute the ball was cleared from Santos box and fell to Colm Mc Elligott on the half way line. He took it around the keeper who had come away out of his area and Colm ran it all the way to the net.
