31st May 2011

CHRISTY RING CUP FINAL
HURLING fever is in the air this week as Crotta supporters abandons its traditional green and red colours in favour of the green and gold of Kerry senior hurlers who will contest this year’s Christy Ring Cup Final in Croke Park on Saturday 4th June.
People are being urged to show their support for the team by erecting flags on their businesses and homes. A large crowd of supporters is expected to descend on GAA headquarters for the match, which throws in at 2.00 p.m.
The Christy Ring Cup final will have an early start to help accommodate Kerry supporters. Kerry will bid to capture a rare hurling championship title at Croke Park when they take on Wicklow in the Christy Ring Cup final , after which dual Kingdom fans will head south to the Gaelic Grounds, where Jack O'Connor's footballers meet Limerick in the Munster SFC semi-final at 6.45pm.
Remember the heartbreak last year in Croke Park when Kerry were caught by an injury time sucker punch against Westmeath- it would be nice to capture the Christy Ring Cup in Croke Park this year and make up for last years agonizing loss.
Tickets for the Christy Ring Cup can be bought in Croke Park on Saturday prior to the game and the County Committee will have tickets for sale during normal office hours from Wednesday next at 11.30am at The Pavilion Austin Stack Park.
The Kerry-Wicklow clash is one of three hurling finals down for decision at GAA headquarters this Saturday, with an all Ulster affair taking place between Donegal and Tyrone in the Lory Meagher Cup final at 12.00pm and London and Louth doing battle in the Nicky Rackard Cup decider at 4.00pm. The Crotta hurling club will be represented by Andrew Keane and Shane Nolan on the Kerry team we send our best wishes to Andrew and Shane and their Kerry team mates and their management on their second attempt of bringing home the cup. C’mon the Kingdom.

CHURCH GATE COLLECTION
The Kerry Cancer Support Group will be holding their Church gate collection at Kilflynn Church this weekend, May 21st and 22nd. To date, from mid August 2010 to May 13th 2011, KCSG group has helped 1250 Kerry patients attend Cork University Hospital for treatment. Our service allows patients travel in modest comfort whilst in a support group of fellow cancer patients. We have been told by our service users that the 'We are all in this together feeling' helps to allay the fear and tension associated with attending for cancer treatment. The Centre of Excellence at CUH is working well but the logistics of getting the patient from Cahirciveen in South Kerry or Ballyduff in North Kerry to CUH five days per week, in some case for many weeks duration, hasn't been worked out by the HSE. Think of the peace of mind enjoyed by patients in not having to get a partner, sibling, relation or friend to take time off work, at great expence, to drive them to CUH. Patients are picked up by our dedicated/unique service and returned back to their starting point having had their treatment, usually before 4 pm the same day. The bus is costing almost €40,000 per annum to run. Putting up over 1000 km per week we will need a replacement vehicle soon so any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Our collection is being organised locally by the Kilflynn Cancer Support Group whom we thank for their help and recent donation of €1300.

KERRY MINOR HURLERS
The Crotta hurling club was represented by Tom McElligott, Leam, Kilflynn on The Kerry Minor Hurling team who were defeated by Clare in Austin Stack Park on Wednesday 27th April. In the Munster Minor Championship, Tom started at cornerback against Cork in the Munster Minor Hurling Championship Losers Round. Cork 0-25 Kerry 2-6 . The final score in this Munster Minor Hurling Championship Losers Round does not adequately reflect the efforts of this brave Kerry Minor Hurling team as they entered the lions den in Pairc Ui Caoimh on Saturday evening and redeemed themselves against the kingpins of Munster Hurling.
It takes a lot of bottle after being pummelled to the canvas just three days earlier by 31 points to dust themselves down and travel to banks of the Lee against a wounded Cork side, when everyone expected another hammering.
So top marks and full respect for these young Kerry hurlers, who displayed the type of pride in wearing the green and gold, that augurs well for Kerry hurling down the road.
