CROTTA UNDER 14 HURLERS CAPTURE FIRST FÉILE NA NGAEL TITLE
Crotta U14 Hurlers were crowned County Féile na nGael U14 Champions for the very first time when they defeated Ballyduff in Hermitage Park Lixnaw on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May. It was a much needed boost for the Club following the disappointment of the Senior team withdrawing from the County Senior Championship.
Although their was a slight breeze it was a perfect day for hurling and a large crowd attended the Final. Crotta played with the breeze in the first half and set the early pace. They had been beaten in last years Final and definitely were out to atone for that on this occasion. Within three minutes Crotta had a goal registered when a long delivery from Crotta's Captain Darragh Behan deflected off Ballyduff's full back’s hurley. Crotta forwards looked dangerous with every attack and could have scored two more goals shortly after, but they lacked their usual composure.
Adam O'Sullivan who was a constant threat throughout scored a lovely point from play on five minutes. The next score was a point from a free by Barry Mahony on ten minutes following a foul on Adam O'Sullivan. Barry was fouled himself two minutes later and again pointed the free. Ballyduff started to settle then but found the Crotta defence tough to breach. Brian O'Connell was winning a lot of ball in the full back position and his long clearances were providing the forwards with a constant supply. Darragh Behan and John Quilter were winning the midfield battle and to be honest Crotta were on top in mostly all positions on the field. Dominic Nolan also mopped up any loose ball and he delivered perfect ball to the half forward line. Jeaic McKenna was cutting of the supply line to Ballyduff's scorer in chief Dillon Robinson. Eamonn Rohan who was playing at centre back also got through a lot of work. In the last four minutes of the half Crotta really got on top, and event though Ballyduff opened their account with a Jack O'Sullivan pointed free, Adam O'Sullivan from play and Barry Mahony with two points(one from a free)put Crotta eight points to the good. The score which really put Crotta in the driving seat came in first half injury time. Darragh O'Donoghue collected a ball on the left wing and headed towards goal. He had two shots saved by the Ballyduff defence but he regained possession and hand passed the ball to the on running Adam O'Sullivan who crashed the sliotar to the Ballyduff net.
Referee Pat Sheehy (Causeway) blew for half time on the puck out with the score standing at Crotta 2-06 Ballyduff 0-01.
Ballyduff needed to hit the ground running on the restart but it was Crotta who scored within a minute of the throw in. John Quilter scored a fantastic point from play following a great run through the Ballyduff defence. Barry Mahony and Jack O'Sullivan traded points from frees in the 23rd and 24th minutes respectively. That free for Ballyduff was their last score of the match while Crotta added three more points from play through Darragh O'Donoghue, Adam O'Sullivan and Barry Mahony.
Full Time: Crotta 2-11 Ballyduff 0-02.
The final whistle was greeted with great jubilation and Crotta had eventually secured their first County Féile na nGael Title after many years of participating. Darragh Behan was a worthy Captain and he was shouldered high after he received the Cup from Kerry Coiste na nOg Chairman Eamon Whelan amid great scenes.

Kerry Coiste na nOg Chairman Eamon Whelan presents the Féile na nGael Cup to victorious Crotta captain Darragh Behan following Crotta’s comprehensive victory over a gallant Ballyduff side in County Féile na nGael final in The Hermitage Park Lixnaw on Bank Holiday Monday 6th May. Photo Mike Parker.

Crotta's 2013 Féile na nGael journey started in the Group stage in Ballyduff on Saturday April 27th. They played Ballyduff(won 3-03 to 0-03) Ardfert(won 4-06 to 0-01) and Lixnaw gave them a walkover. On Saturday May 4th they played Tralee Parnells in the semi final. This game was played in Lerrig and Crotta won a tough match be 0-07 to 0-01. Parnells played more of a containing game but the lads in green and red rose to the challenge and overcame that obstacle. Overall only 7 points were scored against Crotta in the whole tournament which is one of the lowest ever recorded.
Aaron Murnane the Crotta goal keeper did not concede a goal and even though the backs in front of him played great throughout the tournament, when he was called upon he made four great saves(two against Ballyduff and two against Parnells in the semi-final).
Brian O'Connell at full back was outstanding and he got great support from Padraig Hunt and Dominic Nolan. Jeaic McKenna proved to be great at man marking but he can also hurl as well. The two Eamon's, Shanahan and Rohan played great hurling throughout. Midfielders John Quilter and Darragh Behan won this sector in each game they played and the possession they won was put to great use by the six forwards. Daniel Sheehan only took up hurling late last year and proved that he can be an asset to the team. Barry Mahony's year has been blighted by injury but he showed how important he is both from frees and from play.
The Group stage didn't go great for Donal Hunt but his semi final display against Tralee Parnells will last long in the memory and he was an important cog in the wheel. Adam O'Sullivan has really showed this year what a good hurler he is and scored some fine goals and points. The two youngest players on the team were in the corner forward positions. Darragh O'Donoghue also scored a lot over the tournament and his link up play with Adam O'Sullivan was crucial in games. Pauric Shanahan also had a great tournament and got through so much work in every game.
The panel that won the Féile na nGael: Aaron Murnane, Padraig Hunt, Brian O'Connell, Dominic Nolan, Eamon Rohan, Jeaic McKenna, Eamon Shanahan, John Quilter(0-1), Darragh Behan(Capt.)(1-00), Donal Hunt, Barry Mahony(0-06), Daniel Sheehan, Darragh O'Donoghue(0-01), Adam O'Sulivan(1-03), and Pauric Shanahan. Subs: Darragh Murnane for Pauric Shanahan, David Ryan for Barry Mahony, Daniel Quirke for Darragh O'Donoghue, Sean Murnane for Adam O'Sullivan , Daniel O'Rourke for Donal Hunt, Aodhan McKenna, James Sheehan, Cillian Trant, Aodhan Behan and David O'Connell.
Great credit is due to all Players and Parents for their dedication and commitment. The mentors over this team have put in a lot of time and work to get this Group to the level they are at. The majority of this panel started hurling eight and nine years ago and have improved year after year.
Hurling coaching started in Kilflynn School(2002) and Dromclough(2004) and that has been instrumental to the Crotta Coiste na nOg success. We must thank both Schools for allowing this to take place.
The mentors of the Féile na nGael Panel were: Padraig Cronin(Manager), Jerome O'Sullivan, Christy O'Connell, Plunkett McElhatton, Dominic Nolan and Paul O'Donoghue. The mentors would like to thank the Senior Players for their input especially Shane Nolan, J.P Hickey is also thanked for his goal keeping coaching.
Thanks to John Mahony who organised the post match food and to the Parents who helped serving it. Thanks to the Lixnaw Hurling Club who hosted the Final and to Johnny Conway the Co-ordinator of the Féile na nGael. Thanks also to Lixnaw G.A.A Club for refreshments after the match.
It was great to see so many Supporters get behind the team during the year and to turn up in great numbers again for the Final, and all connected with the Féile na nGael panel thank you.
To our main Sponsor Prim's Restaurant, Kilflynn we again say thanks. Eamon Whelan Kerry Coiste na nOg Chairman who incidentally played for Crotta, mentioned that it was great for the Crotta Club to win the Féile na nGael and he gave special mention to Sonny Egan. Sonny is the current Crotta Coiste na nOg Chairman and is key to the Club running smoothly. Sonny also kept the hurling flame lit for years and years when things were bleak and it was great to see him so proud of the lads. We must also dedicate this win to every Mentor of underage teams who down through the years gave so much time to training the young lads since Feile was first played all those years ago. To see Mike Hickey, Gerald Byrnes, Paddy Weir(Senior Chairman) and more too numerous to mention who coached teams over the years, witness this achievement was great. We also think of Diarmuid Galvin who coached so many teams over the years. Sadly he is no longer with us, but he must also be smiling. Its on to Limerick now for the National Féile na nGael 2013 Finals from July 5-7. A new experience for the Club and one that is eagerly awaited.
