NOVEMBER 2008

25th November

Kilflynn's Denis O'Connell (Centre) being congratulated for becoming winning navigator of the Top Part Westcoast Rally Championship by Kerry Motor Club's Chairman Martin Quirke and Kevin Walsh Clerk of Course in The Mini Stages Rally at The Kerry Motor Club night out in Parker's Pub on Saturday night 15th November

KILFLYNN MAN IS 2008 TOP WEST COAST RALLY CHAMPION
Eleven years after winning his first Top Part West Coast Rally Championship Shannagoldens Ed Synan and Kilflynn’s Denis O’Connell are the 2008 Top Part West Coast Champion. The crew had a exceptional seasons rallying finishing well inside the top 20 on 5 of the counting rounds with Synan’s only non finish occurring at this years Fels Point Circuit of Kerry Rally in March. The duo finished 11th overall and 2nd in class on the Birr Multi Stages Rally in February followed by 8th overall and 1st in class on Ed’s home rally the Circuit of Munster. On the Circuit of Kerry Ed had his former co driver David Doherty on the notes as Denis was co driving for Ardfert’s John Kearney with whom he had won the 2005 Kerry Mini Stages rally but both crews suffered mechanical troubles forcing them to retire. Galway Motor Club hosted round 4 of the championship and once again Ed and Denis collected valuable championship points on their way to finishing 17th O/A and 2nd in class. Round 5 took place in Clare in heavy rain and very slippery conditions and the crew finished 15th O/A and 3rd in class. This Ed lying 2nd overall in the championship behind former championship winner Castleisland’s Alan Ring with Dennis laying 3rd overall in the co driver’s standings. With the final round been organised by Dennis’s home club and 2 of the stages running through his home village of Kilflynn the crew took to the start line with the aim to at least secure 2nd overall in the championship. Stage one was Kilflynn which included the famous flying crossroads which was previously used 1983 and the crew were 2nd fastest 2 wheel drive car through the stage and leaders of their class. Stage 2 once again saw the crew hold the lead in their class and remain inside the top 10 with championship leader Alan Ring lying 5th overall. Stage 3 once again took place through Kilflynn village with Ed and Denis once again setting fastest time in their class in front of the huge crowds who had gathered in the village to cheer on the local crews. Stage 4 the Cashen was the final stage of the rally and this was to be the stage were the championship would be decided. About 3 miles into the 10 mile stage championship leader Alan Ring slide wide on a corner forcing him to clip a ditch which in turn left him with a puncture and suspension damage causing him to drop valuable time as he limped through the remainder of the stage. Synan and O’Connell caught and passed Ring but then had the pressure of making sure they did not make any mistakes in the slippery conditions. The reached the finish ramp in Banna Beach Hotel and had to wait for the final results to confirm that they had been crowned the 2008 Top Part West Coast Rally Champions. This is a great win for Ed and Denis who had to face tough opposition throughout the year and especially for Denis to win the championship on his home rally.
Denis will collect the Trophyworld Cup as the Champion Co Driver for 2008 at The Top Part West Rally Championship Awards in Galway on February 14th 2009.Runner up place goes to Sean Mullanny with Adrian Deasy 3rd
Other Kerry Motor Members who will collect awards on the night are Mike Quinn/Sean Enright Overall 2 wheel drive winners.

SPECIAL COLLECTION
Daniel O’Connell, The Liberator, one of Kerry most prominent sons, has left an indelible mark on the county, country and its people. In helping to secure Catholic Emancipation through peaceful means, O’Connell served as an inspiration and model for other world leaders. The Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church of the Holy Cross, Cahersiveen stands as a testament to his greatness and the legacy he gave all of us. For over a century the church has served the parishioners well. Over the decades, temporary maintenance provided short-term solutions, however they have embarked on an extensive restoration and preservation project to ensure this remains one of the Diocese of Kerry’s significant treasures. A fund-raising initiative is underway, involving the parishioners of Cahersiveen, the diocese and beyond.
Bishop Murphy is seeking the support of the entire diocese and has requested a special collection on the 22nd/23rd November 2008. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

This replay played in good conditions was closely contested in the 1st half, with Beale scoring an early goal. Good play from Bill Keane set up Raymond Nolan for St. Senans1st goal half time score Senans 1-03 Beale 1-02.
The 2nd half sarted out with Beale getting an early goal, but excellent half forward play by C.Kennelly, B.Keane &C.Mc Kenna were sending in quality ball to the full forward line where Raymond Nolan struck for two more goals ably assisted by D.Behan in the other corner.

TRICK OR TREAT: Kilflynn Girls, Sarah Morris, Chloe Neenan, Clodagh Sheehan, Liane Relihan and Riadh Brosnan enjoying Trick or Treat in Kilflynn on Friday night 1st November

TRICK OR TREAT
On Friday night last was Halloween night and it is clear that many of the old traditions of Halloween still survive strongly in the locality with many children dressing up as witches, devils goblins and other scary creatures and travelling from house to house offering a "trick or treat" at every door.
The trick or treat brigade were out in large numbers in The Kilflynn area. Some were ferried about in cars, while others, came on shanks mare and carried huge black bags. A glance into one of the bags could reveal anything such as Sweets, Taytos, Apples, bars, and nuts. They went from house to house repeating their trick or treat manta and people responded by throwing in some goods, kept at the ready. This festival has it’s roots in paganism, Christianity, and many other traditions, and all have blended together to give us what we universally have today.
