KERRY 1986 All Ireland B Hurling C/ship Team

It was the third time had won the All Ireland previously having won it in 1976 and 1983. Kerry played Down in the first round and after a struggle in Tralee won by 1-11 to 2-05. Derry in Tralee were Kerry's next opponents and this was a much more comfortable win on a scoreline of Kerry 2-22 Derry 0-04. In the home semi-final Kerry met Roscommon in Portlaoise where again Kerry were emphatic winners on a scoreline of Kerry 2-23 Roscommon 0-08. Carlow were Kerry's opponents in the home final in Thurles and a crucial Todd Nolan goal sealed a Kerry win after a cracker of a game. Final score Kerry 2-14 Carlow 1-16. FIDDLES – Festival of North Kerry Music by Sean Abeyta
If I had previously been asked about tunes particular to the north Kerry area, I would have been hard put to recall two or three of them. In the Rice-Walsh collection, which this festival had focused on, there were over forty tunes alone relevant to North Kerry. They were from the repertoire of a blind fiddler, one Jeremiah Breen, from Ballyconry near Lisselton, reputedly born in 1827. There is very little known about him, and even though his music was finally published in Chicago in the 1920’s, a lot of it has since faded into obscurity.
On Saturday 2nd October 2010, workshops took place in Kilflynn National School. Twenty-one people (adults and children) from all over North Kerry attended. Before departing, all present played the four tunes they had learned that day, tunes from the Rice-Walsh collection (Jeremiah Breen’s music), amongst other collections.
The ‘Fiddles’ festival was only a part of a more important project currently underway. We hope to record and document the musical history of North Kerry. This will allow people easier access to information such as the styles of playing, and the tunes of different localities in the area, etc. With over thirty musicians performing in Parker’s Pub, Kilflynn on Saturday night 2nd October and the significant turnout on Sunday afternoon in Parker’s for the Nicky McAuliffe and Ciarán Dalton lecture on the music of North Kerry, it is clear there is a positive interest in giving the musical heritage of North Kerry its rightful place amongst the traditions of Ireland. “Drawing From the Well’’ is a much welcomed publication, in that we have now re-issued some north Kerry music and are, as it were, putting it out there once again. This booklet, is complete with fine pictures and over twenty-five tunes with accompanying tune lore. It is due to the work of Tom MacUileagóid, Eugene O’Sullivan, Graham Guerin, Paul de Grae and Ciarán Dalton that this booklet was possible at all. It is available to purchase for €10. Contact Seán at 087 3433676 (or any committee member)

Along with a photographic display of the musicians of yesteryear by Ciarán Dalton, the Kilflynn choir joined by musicians Kevin Abeyta, Graham Guerin and Tom MacUileagóid performed for Sunday morning mass, adding further to the enjoyment and interest of the festival.
It is only appropriate to wrap up this successful weekend, by showing due appreciation to those who gave selflessly of their time to this festival and the project overall. I would like to thank Francis White for the use of the school and its facilities; The music teachers: Máire O’Keeffe, Graham Guerin, Tom MacUileagóid and James Duggan; Parker’s Pub for the use of the premises, and providing the barbeque with chef Padraig Dennehy. I would sincerely like to thank all the committee members: Ciarán Dalton (secretary), Ann O’Mahony (treasurer), Graham Guerin (treasurer), and Fergus O’Sullivan (PRO) for the immense help in preparation for which none of the above would have been possible.
The raffle raised much needed funds for the festival and continuing project, and I would like to thank Hygi-Care, raffle sponsors as listed below and all who participated, especially Mary Dillon and Maureen McElligott.

KILDALKEY ABU
Congratulations to former Crotta hurler, David Brady and his Kildalkey team mates who retained the Meath Senior Hurling title at Pairc Tailteann Navan on Sunday 10th October.
They did so against a fancied but unconvincing Kilmessan team by 1-21 to 2-13. Its always a day good when you beat the Kingpins of Meath hurling, but its more the sweeter to do it in a final and get revenge for the loss of the 2008 final after a replay when Kildalkey should really have won the first game. David playing at midfield scoring a point in each half.
