CROTTA U-12
Our U12 team were crowned County Champions when they won the Michael Reidy Trophy in Lixnaw on Saturday 25th September. They defeated St Brendans in an excellent match when kept the large attendance enthralled right till the final whistle. Ardfert were favourites coming into the match but what most people forgot was that Crotta had beaten holders Lixnaw fairly convincingly in the semi final. To sum up the match Crotta started the better and more importantly they finished very strongly scoring four points in the last ten mins.
The period of play in between was typical Championship fare and contested by two well prepared teams with some outstanding talent on both sides. Barry Mahony opened the scoring for Crotta after Darragh O'Donoghue had been fouled. Mahony added two more pointed frees following good incisive runs by Cathal Kennelly which resulted in two fouls on him. A long range free by Barry Mahony was deflected to the Ardfert net by full forward Paudie Dillon in the tenth minute and at this stage it was all Crotta. However Ardfert hit a purple patch and scored 1-04 without reply to lead by a point. Barry Mahony levelled matters again after some powerful play by the impressive Colin Browne but Fionan Mackessy had the last say of the half pointing from play. Half time Ardfert 1-05 Crotta 1-04. On the resumption Ardfert attacked but Darragh Kennelly who gave a man of the match display repelled all that was thrown at him. Having said that, Eric Leen who played centre back for Ardfert was himself having a thunderous game. A well worked move by Thomas Quinlan and Browne saw the latter score a tremendous point to even things again. It was end to end stuff for the next ten mins but Crotta were more productive from their attacks. From one of these Thomas Quinlan gave Crotta the lead but Ardfert equalised immediately. So we entered the final ten minutes and the emergence of Sean O'Donoghue and Adam O'Sullivan on the half forward line having been switched from the full forward line swung things in Crotta's favour. These two players collected breaking ball and were fouled time and again by the indiscipline of the Ardfert backs. Donal Hunt who had entered the fray earlier was also upended and Barry Mahony who was to miss only one free from ten duly converted all three frees to put Crotta two points up entering the final few minutes. Ardfert had one last attack but found Darragh Kennelly unbeatable. Referee Butch Fealy who was fair throughout, sounded the final whistle to great cheers from the Crotta faithful. A tremendous achievement considering that seven of the starting fifteen are under eleven and had already collected U11 championship medals a few weeks ago. Darragh O'Donoghue (9 years old) was the youngest on the team at corner forward. Eamonn Whelan Vice Chairman of Kerry Coiste na nOg, who incidentally played underage for Crotta, presented the Cup to Crotta Captain Cathal Kennelly amid jubilant scenes. Cathal thanked all players, parents and coaches and thanked the Lixnaw Club for having the pitch etc in excellent condition. Team as follows:Brandon Conway Dylan McElligott Darragh Kennelly John Quilter Jack McKenna Barry Mahony(0-09) Dominic Nolan Colin Browne(0-01) Thomas Quinlan(0-01) Sean O'Donoghue Cathal Kennelly, Capt Sean Galvin Adam O'Sullivan Paudie Dillon(1-00) Darragh O'Donoghue. Brian O'Connell for Sean Galvin Donal Hunt for Jack McKenna Darragh Behan Aaron Murnane David Ryan Eamon Shanahan Padraig Hunt Darragh Stack Jack Glavin Darragh Sheehan. The Club would like to thank the Lixnaw Club for having everything right for the match, referee Butch Fealy and his team of officials and to Paddy White for organising all County competitions in such an efficient manner. Thanks to Aidan Behan of St Senans who has worked in tandem with us and enabled both clubs to fulfil all fixtures. Thanks to Dave O'Halloran Chairman of St Senans and to Mike and Bobs Barry for allowing us to train in both pitches while our own was being redeveloped. Thanks to all coaches and parents for their dedication. Finally the Club would like to wish Eamonn Whelan all the best when he takes up the post of Chairman of Kerry Coiste na nOg shortly. For the record Crotta junior team won the second match at Lixnaw, the Division 3 final and Tom Blond McElligott and Brendan Mahony starred in this win. Their two sons namely Dylan McElligott and Barry Mahony had played for Crotta U12 team in the first game.

JUNIORS
The Crotta junior hurlers retained the County league Division 3 title with a 4-11 to 0-08 victory over a gallant St Brendan's side also on Saturday in Lixnaw. Crotta led by 1-06 to 0-03 at the interval break. Crotta scorers were Sean Twomey 3-07, Mikie Barry 1-02, Peter McGrath 0-01, and Darragh Mc Aullifee 0-01. The gremlins struck my computer this week and I lost some notes, but hopefully I will have them recovered for next week Kilflynn notes. Apologies.

SENIOR HURLERS
The Crotta Senior hurlers interest in this year's A.I.B County Championship came to an end at Austin Stacks Park, Tralee on Saturday 4th September, when they lost to Lixnaw on the 1-11 to 0-10 score-line. Steven Power was first to add his name to the Lixnaw score sheet in the opening minutes and Shane Nolan cancelled the advantage from the puck out. Nolan added another shortly afterwards and a Tom Cronin effort from a Cyril Lynch clearance split the Lixnaw defence and Cronin pointed. James Flahery pointed to pull one back for Lixnaw and was unlucky in their next attempt as a Fergus Fitzmaurice, Pat Crorridan effort to Flahery hit the side netting. Andrew Keane pointed from 90 metres to give Crotta a 4 point advantage at the end of the first quarter, Crotta 0-6 Lixnaw 0-2. Both Steven Power and Cillian Fitzmaurice then pointed from play and James Flaherty waltzed through the Crotta defence to raise the green flag and upped their game limiting Crotta to a single score from a Shane Nolan point to lead by 2 at the interval break. Lixnaw 1-06 Crotta 0-07.
James Flahery pointed from a free to give Lixnaw a 3 point margin but in the next passage of play Jonathan Caffrey linked up with Sean Weir who blasted the ball low and hard and beat Lixnaw's keeper Martin Stackpoole to level the game with a well drilled shot. 3 further points from Flaherty showed Lixnaw's dominance on the game, but a dangerous lead as Shane Nolan went low and hard from a 20 meter free and that was cleared by Tom Brosnan. At the end of the third quarter Lixnaw ahead by 4. 1-11 to 1-07. In the 18th minute Lixnaw were reduced to 14 men and in the following minutes Andrew Keane and Nolan reduced the margin to 2. With 5 remaining on the clock, Crotta will rue the missed chances as they had possession and failed to convert from 4 attacks and the man of the match James Flaherty had his last score in injury time and Ian McCarthy had Crotta's last effort and Lixnaw now have a semi final spot against the defending champions Kilmoyley. Lixnaw 1-12 Crotta 1-10
Crotta Team: Sean Twomey, Pa Quille, Philip Twomey, Darren Twomey, Mike Lynch, Andrew Keane (0-02), Cyril Lynch (0-01),Richard Nolan, Mikey Barry,Eoin O'Sullivan, Tom Cronin (Captain) (0-01), Francis Keane, Sean Weir (1-00), Jonathan Caffrey, and Shane Nolan (0-05)
