KILFLYNN DRAMA GROUP
Its been many long years ago since there was A Play or
Variety Show in Kilflynn village and you would have to
go back to the 1950 and 1960s to find a time when
there was at least one show a year. With the start of
a Drama Society this year it is the hope of everyone
that we will have an annual Play for many years to
come. Of course back in those days the Church didn't
allow dances during Lent and so the community turned
to the stage as a form of entertainment. We've heard
many a great story from back in those Days about
wonderful actors the likes of Tom Joe O'Sullivan,
Patrick Mahony, Maureen Hickey, Denis Condon, Paud
White, Nora Neenan, Michael Parker, The Cahills to
name put a few, many of whom have Passes on now to a
new stage. (R.I.P).
So it is fantastic to renew such a tradition this year
and although the days are long gone where dancing was
banned. the face that the first play by Kilflynn Drama
Society science that time is on during Lent is without
doubt a nod to the great men and women of yester year.
With the passage of time of course and a new
beginning, all the cast of this years play are new
comers to the stage, but with names such as Lynch,
Brennan, Neenan, McElligott, Parker and O'Brien ,
joined by some of our newer residents to the village
like Guiheen, Mulligan and Harris , co-produced by Tim
O’Halloran and Clive Putman feels there got a "Dream
Team".
The Play itself "A Widows Paradise" is a piece of
comedy genius By Sam Cree and although set back in the
1960's has a modern feel to it, with some wonderful
turns of phrase and a pace that will have the audience
on the edge of there seats and tears of laughter in
there eyes. Ruby (Marian Lynch) is a strong forceful
woman who has made a decision that "Never Again" is
the way forward and is fervently supported by Vanessa
(Brenda Muligan) and Rachel(Geraldine Parker), however
Her friend Lucy (Kathleen McElligott) has a different
point of view, while her daughter Sylvia (Helena
Brennan) is an independent young woman with a mind of
her own.
The cast and crew have been enjoying the busy
rehearsals for what promises to be a cracker of a
play, organised by O'Neill's Crotta Hurling Club takes
place in St. Columbus Centre Hall in Kilflynn on
Friday March 2nd, Saturday March 3rd and Sunday March
4th with doors open at 7.30 p.m. and curtain at 8.15
sharp. Booking is essential as space is limited. In a
further effort to beat the recession blues, tickets
will be selling at only €10 each so come along and
enjoy a fabulous night’s entertainment that certainly
won’t break the bank! To Book contact ; Maureen on 087
9893847 anytime or Mike on; 066 7135129 after 5 pm.
