KILFLYNN N.S ARE CHAMPIONS
There are times in life when we want to stand still, live in the moment and bottle up the memory, on Thursday 7th November at Austin Stacks Park, Tralee was one of those times.
St. Teresa’s National School, Kilflynn football team were crowned the newly Kerry Cumann na mBunscol 4/5 teacher shield final winners and we couldn’t be prouder of this amazing bunch of players!
Leaving the dressing room before the match they were fired up; they were full of belief in their ability and no other option but to win was on their minds. It is this self- belief that encouraged them to dig deep tonight when the going got tough.
When the first ball was thrown in, we knew that mid-field duo Darragh and Michael Óg meant business. They drove at the Ballyduff back line with ferocious determination. The ball moved swiftly, and it met the right man at the right time Rían and he opened our scores with a tasty point. This was followed in close concession with another fabulous point from Darragh.
Not to be outdone by his older brother, up next came a goal from Sean Óg that rattled the net with accuracy! We were in the zone now and Darragh stepped up with another classy point.
What we admire is the versatility of this team, we don’t just rely on our forwards to score and Edward proved on the night. He was next to notch up a score when he powered from his own fullback like to tear open Ballyduff’s defence and kick one over the bar. Not satisfied with just one, he closely followed with his second.
At this point Ballyduff had kicked three points from frees but our team stood their ground. We had nifty passes from J.J, we had Tom covering every blade of grass working as a forward but dropping back when needed, we had Dylan intercepting balls that shouldn’t be his, we had Cody using his fitness and speed to tease his opponents and Charlie using his physical strength to ensure every ball was safe in his hands.
Kilflynn led at half time 1-5 to 3 points, but we knew this game was far from over.
The duffers started the second half with determination, pace and power to kick three crucial points. But they didn’t stop there, a high ball that looked to be going over the bar, hit the back of the net!
It was the heroic efforts of our goalie Ronan that kept us in the game. Following the goal he made two outstanding saves that turned the game in our favour. He spurred the team on and reignited their sense of self-belief.
The ball moved fast with little time left on the clock. A ball that almost reached the corner flag, was scooped up by Rían and he meandered his way through the Ballyduff defence. This movement was done with such speed and in a blink of an eye his rapid shot flew past the Ballyduff goalie. Austin Stacks Park erupted.
A scoreline of 2-5 to 1-6 in the dying minutes of the game. Up burst Edward with the strength of two horses and kicked another fantastic point.
Before we knew it, referee Billy Lacey blew the final whistle and scenes of elation unfolded. It was at that moment that this group of players wrote their names in our history books. This is what school memories are all about.
We couldn’t let the moment pass without mentioning our amazing players on our sidelines- those that have shown us great moments these years, those that cheer when we win and comfort when we lose- Alan, Shauna, Cara, Elsie, Laura, Charlotte, Lochlan, Oisin and our new lucky charm Jayden!
Congratulations and well done to the Kilflynn panel of Ronan Galvin, Edward NolanCharlie Ryan, Cody McKenna, Dylan McElligott, Darragh Diggins (capt), Michael Óg Lynch, Rían Hannon, Tom Relihan, JJ Whyte, Sean Óg Hannon, Shauna McElligott, Cara Nolan, Alan McCarthy, Laura Breen, Elsie Hext, Charlotte Casey, Lochlan Barry, Jayden Molyneaux And Oisin Doyle and to their fantastic mentors Sinead Hogan and Nora Falvey who guided the school to victory in their first year in the Job. Well done again guys, keep it up.
