North Kerry 1-16, East Kerry 3-09
North Kerry was crowned Keane’s SuperValu Minor County Football Champions on Thursday evening, September 17th. In wet and windy conditions under the lights of Austin Stack Park, the North Kerry side defeated their East Kerry counterparts by the bare minimum in an enthralling championship finale.
In the 56th minute, Odhran Buckley laid it off to Timmy Kennelly who dropped the ball into the square and St. Senan’s and Crotta player Ryan Hurley fisted it home.East Kerry’s kickout was broken down by James Kissane to Hurley who worked it to Mulvihill who fisted the ball over the bar to put North Kerry ahead for the first time. The remaining minutes were frantic with East Kerry trying to find an equaliser or even a goal to win. North Kerry defended brilliantly in the dying minutes, exemplified by a crucial turnover by Ronan Sheridan. In the last minute, East Kerry looked to have levelled it, but the referee judged that the ball had been thrown. The free was kicked long and the hooter sounded. North Kerry are County Minor champions for the second time to add to the u16 title won 10 days earlier.
The captain, Tadhg O’ Connell accepted the cup on behalf on the team and John Curtain received the Man on the Match award. Congratulations to the North Kerry players, especially the St. Senan’s/ Crotta players Mikey Somers, Ewan Somers, Ryan Hurley, Tadhg Doran, and Cian Slemon.
